Forums - Sony - ps3 loss vs. blu-ray / HD profits?

Obviously Sony has lost money on the PS3.

When you consider blu-ray sales, the sale of Sony blu-ray players, the faster HD tv sales that come with a clear winner in the HD format in addition to PS3 games, was it worth it for Sony to lose so much money to win the format war?

Nope.

How does that sound as an answer?

Tease.

it depends. If blu ray is really the next big thing then it should stay on the market for at least another 10-20 years so it could make decent profit during that time

Definitely a good 'move' for Sony. Everyone I know loves watching movies in Bluray, including myself. Who cares if they 'won' or 'lost' the console war or lost a tiny bit of money, they will come out on top in the long haul as bluray will be around for quite a while.

yea blu ray aint going no where blu ray will probly be the last major pysical format before everything goes digital (for movies atleast)

well unfortunately, many people still dont have bluray. i dont know a single xbox fan/owner (personally) that owns a bluray player or is interested in it. though a few of them bought the hddvd add on and seem to resent bluray. so if my experience holds true for most others, it could be hard for bluray to get completely mainstreamed

From a monentary standpoint, the financial reports wouldn't support this theory currently.

If you add up the estimated PS3 losses vs total Sony profits in the past five years, they are running a big deficit.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

PS3 still has another 5 years of making profit, so they may not be in the red that bad by the end of the PS3's life.

Blu-ray is slowly gaining ground. The recession hasn't helped much in the adoption of a new format but it still shows healthy growth and should only get better with more 1080p tvs in homes.

Screen sizes keep getting bigger, the advantage of blu-ray will only become more noticeable. When I bought my tv 5 years ago I had to place a special order to get the 52 inch version. Now when I walk into the shop there's a whole selection of 55 inch and 60 inch flatscreens in stock for less then half the price.

The ps3 makes a profit now and has everything going for it to make the losses back. I know that when I want a blu-ray player for the bedroom I'll end up buying another ps3 instead of a standalone player.
