Yeah, when Sony catches up to MS, it doesn't matter any more. But when MS is ahead it matters.

Right.

I think that he implies that no one would think before this generation that Sony would face a >5 Bn US$ accumulated loss and to be fighting for the second place, while MS will sell more than two and a half times the amount they sold last generation. It would matter much, it's the big numbers that matter. The fight for the second place is only important as a PR weapon in the fanboys wars.

So why have the discussion again? If being second place or third isn't important why make such a topic?

What happened 5 years agao, is done. People who live in the past, will always be in the past. Sony is actually taking a much better step by looking out for their future instead of thinking of the past.

In case you guys didn't realize, PS3 is outselling pretty much everything this year. And that's at the price point of $299.

I consider that as a great achievement from Sony. 4 years ago they messed up, big deal. The 5 billion dollar loss is indeed a big deal, but they will obviously have profit as a priority from now on.

And if they don't have it, then its their business, really. If they want to throw money, then they will, and no one can pretty much stop them.

it doesnt matter any more.

MS... mission accomplished.

no... it doesnt matter any more because of the timescales involved and the install base.

The 360 has over 50m out there... it has increased its market share massively over the last gen.  Not a single Sony fan would have thought that MS would have achieved that this gen and not a singlke Sony fan would have thought the 360 would still be ahead of the PS3 after 5 years.

But if it makes you happy then I also think that it doesnt matter any more that the 360 is ahead. Both have an install base that is sustainable and both have done well.

If some Sony fans want to trumpet dragging themselves from 3rd to 2nd as some kind of victory one day in 2013, when the next gen will be upon us and the 360 is 8yrs old then good luck to them.    I guess expectations change from gen to gen.

So things should happen like sony fans think?

lmao you giving us that much importance is amazing. Sure nobody predicted 360 would have outsold the PS3 last gen(I wasn't even a Sony fan then but still), why give them that much importance?

I guess not being in the last gen is my problem. I always see things respective to the time.

It's likely going to be a similar scenario to what happened in September 09 - June 10 when 360 and PS3 cut price again. 360 is about to close in on saturation in North America and a price cut will likely have a similar impact to the price cut that DS had last year (ie. almost no impact). PS3 will probably pick up a huge amount of steam this year, particularly in Europe, if it sees a £50/€60 cut.

The same saturation that XBox360 faces in USA, PS3 faces in Japan and Europe. It's wishful thinking to consider them as different scenarios, when the circumstances are similar.

Not all that similar.  Looking specifically at Europe, the PS3 launched a year and a half later there than the 360 did in North America (November 2005 vs March 2007), and remains at a relatively much higher price point than the 360.

And really, looking at the entirety of EMEAA, it's an absolutely huge market.  The PS3 has only just begun tapping into markets like the Philippines.

LOL funny but somewhat kinda true.

OT: If we get a price cut this year from ps3 then its settled.

All depends on what happens this Year really.

Last Year, despite everything the 360 pulled out (Slim, Halo, Fable, Kinect), the PS3 still outsold it for the Year. It's outsold it so far this Year too.

Pricecuts this Year will decide it. I think if Sony do a $50 cut, then MS will drop the $100 counter cut right after. Sony need to do the big $100 cut... Or do some big bundles with colours or something this Year to go along with any $50 cut.

like someone above me said, it doesn't matter anymore. Both 360 & ps3 have too big a userbase for a 5mil difference to mean anything. if the ps3 does catch the 360, nothing major will happen. Neither console will dominate the other or "lose" to the other.

True 300 euro isn't much in west but in the eastern europe and asia where average monthly salary dips into 600-800 euro or even lower price drop to 200 makes huge diffrence.

PROUD MEMBER OF THE PSP RPG FAN CLUB

Couple of things.

The big thing that is truely disruptive to any change is the tragedy in Japan.  The next 4 weeks in Japan last year the PS3 outsold the 360 by 150K.  I believe that the PS3 was already going to be down a great deal in Japan the next few weeks, but with the Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear situation Japan consumers are just not going to be as interested in consumer products.  I really expect that consoles sales will be cut in 1/2 the remainder of this year in Japan and the country rallies to start rebuilding.  I believe people will be out helping each other and if any video game sales do well in this environment it will be handhelds as people take the devices with them when they go out to help each other.

Second the situation with the Yen is going to make it a great deal harder for Sony to cut PS3 prices without sacrificing profitability.  So when there is a price cut it will be $50.  MS will easily counter that and could see them cut further particularly on the Kinect bundles.

Third it just doesnt matter anymore. As others have said if the PS3 ever takes #2 it will be when this generation is waning and software developers just wont care.  This isnt what Sony thought would happen so from what Sony thought would happen this generation was a setback/loss for Sony and a net gain for MS.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

I do agree microsoft have performed considerabally well this gen compare to their first atempt, but i wouldnt say mission acomplished as im sure they want Sony out of the race compeletley, i would also say they stole valuable market share as in america, id say they got that nailed, but ext gen should work on EU, mabe not bother with japan lol
