P.S I think the action as a whole is wrong, if any company was involved, even my favourite one like Ben and Jerry or something, not hating on Sony specifically so please don't make a posse and lynch me.

I am truly surprised this is happening. Corporations never seem to win on this scale anymore
I think Sony is collecting the IP's to prove that releasing the hack has caused others to use the console illegaly by copying software. Sony in no way will come after those IP's, it is just providing support to their claim to prove that Geohot is guilty.

Hmm....youtube gets your IP address when you view their videos, you don't have a problem with that.
Now Sony gets, it, OH NOES, THEY ARE THE EVILS lol.
That's like saying a corporation is bad for getting your street address, and street adress is more important than a f*cki*g IP that changes everytime you reset your router.
Your identity is safe. All they want to know, (and will know, through the help of IPs) is your location, your city and country, that's all. Not your exact street address.
Big deal.
considering how long it takes to do look ups, i doubt most of them will ever be done, or the data correlating to 80-90% will not have been retained by the sip by the time they get to it. this is really a moot point. thankfully ISPs are defending us not out of the goodness of their hearts but because it costs too much to keep staff for all these look ups, and they know an IP does not equal one person… mainly the cost
