Forums - Nintendo - Mark Rein: If 3DS could 'deliver' Unreal Engine 3, we'd be on it

Honestly it really is, you had them say the same thing before they touched a 3DS, they don't confirm they've checked it out now, then you have Epic supporting the NGP and showing off their unreal engine running on that, so I feel it's all a business choice by him. They supported PS3 and 360 and they marketed the engine to all the developers and had a lot of backing by Sony at the start. That is how they've made money this gen, now when they support NGP they sorta have to trash talk the 3DS since that would be a rival platform, they MUST downplay it essentially.

Crytech says they can get the latest Cry engine working on the 3DS, MT framework is working, and it's like hell have you even seen the character models in MGS3D?  That sorta proves the hardware is there, Nintendo has talked about having the tech there for peoples engines, such as shaders. Honestly though it's what makes sense business wise to them, they think certain types of developers will support the NGP, they have Sony backing them, I highly doubt they have a 3DS dev kit and if they did they just recently got it, and it all boils down to who can they sell the engine to, a system where non gritty "realistic" graphics are fine to the fans or the system where people will be expecting it... Epic is just doing what's smart for them but they need to shut the hell up about it in the mean time.

Why do people keep on wanting their support? If you like their games so much buy something that can play them

The customers are not beholden to the developers. This is not a utility. They have to please us if they want to make money.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

For people that are saying that UE3 can be adapted for 3DS... Epic might as well port UE2. They'd look the exact same since UE3 would have to be heavily dumbed down for the 3DS.

Besides, why all the interest? UE3 isn't the best engine in the market anyway.

But clearly they do not care about Nintendo fans and they know if you want their games you will buy something that plays them

That does not make the customers' wants secondary to the developers' wants. They still have to make a good game that people will buy, not simply make a game that they can slap their name on. Unreal and Unreal Tournament are not as big series as Gears, despite being made Epic.

like i said in the other thread , Unreal Engine is useless, its meh , and its a resource monster, the only good thing about it is that it is cheap.

Not sure what you consider not "meh". It is an engine and there are some good games on it. So depends on the developer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games

there are a lot of games using it , because like i said, its very cheap , its the cheapest "HD" compatible engine on the market, so if developers looking for more profit but more buggy engine and dark glossy jelly-like shaders, they use this.

to me, this

Looks better than this

and one of them is 5 years older than the other.

Unreal engine is one of the reasons why some people find games nowadays so "Grey", colorless, grainy and unispiring

but that is what MaTURE!!!! is baby :P thats what the cool dudes want too play FUCk yeAh!! :P lol

Its weird he says the 3ds doesnt meet standards, but they have unreal engine on the iOS.......

I just took up for Nintendo, and I don't even like them.. whats wrong with me.

As a guess, there is nothing wrong with you and you "took up for Nintendo" because you see the truth about Mark Reign ...

There are lots of developers who come from a very different side of the market than Nintendo, and have very different views about how to be successful, and as a result they don't (really) have any intention to develop products for certain Nintendo platforms. If most of these developers said that they would support a Nintendo platform that matched their requirements I would believe them because they have demonstrated rationality when talking about Nintendo in the past; even those who have a legitimate reason to dislike Nintendo. On the other hand, most people know that regardless of what Nintendo produces Mark Reign will continue to bash it ...

An example of another developer is John Carmack, who has legitimate reasons to dislike Nintendo after their falling out over Quake 64. Years ago he was asked whether the Gamecube could "Handle" Doom 3 and his response was something like "In many ways the Gamecube is better suited to the Doom 3 engine than the XBox is"; which spurred the follow up question "Does this mean we will see Doom 3 ported to the Gamecube" and Carmack's response was (essentially) "no".
