I'd say 8.5 million.

The retailers have WAY too much supply to sell, Sony is having a difficult time moving the product along due to its still expensive product, inadequate online support, and lack of franchise characters.

Great and powerful system, but too expensive to the hardcore market still In my opinion.

Although somewhat off topic, the xbox 360 has had 3 christmas seasons that were in all major areas (jap, usa, "others") The ps3 on the other hand has had only 2 christmas seasons and this is the first one theyve had in others. Although i could be wrong about the xbox360 having 3 christmas seasons in all regions, i just wanted to point that out.

I don't think it will quite reach 9m, but it will be close...but probably closer to 8.5m.

Anyway, for all the negativity surrounding the PS3, it certainly is doing much better now and seeing as it's only been on the European market for 9 months and it's first Euro Xmas and compare the first year sales to that of the 360, the PS3 should have sold more.

Also, the PS3 needs to have a good 2008 and I reckon it will have, so this is where the ground will be made up between the 360 and PS3 sales.

Remember the 360 only moved 2.5m consoles from 1st Jan - 1st July 2007 and had a total of 10.5m consoles sold by 1st July 2007. I can see the PS3 easily beating the number over the next 6 months.



Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

Lol, i also was yhinking about that. =)

PS2 had almost 2 WW Christmas without shortages and without competitors.
It sold 21 mln. on second WW Christmas.
x360 had only 1 WW Christmas withjout shortages and without competitors, but sold only 8 mln. That`s why it won`t win this generation.

PS3 now having 1st WW Christmas without shortages. It will sell around 9 mln. And gonna sell 15 mln. over next year. =)

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.


Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

I think we have to hand it to Sony for turning this around. At one point it looked like it might sell under 7M. So who here is willing to admit they underestimated the PS3 this christmas?
 
It is now clear that the PS3 will easily overtake the 360 in sales next christmas. The Playstation brand is so strong it kept up with the 360 this christmas with only one (R&C) big game from the PS2.
