Forums - Gaming - Why a 6-10 hour game is sufficient

If only a 10 hour game "in theory" actually lasted 10 hours and not 6.

When a game is claimed to be 20 hours long in a lot of cases it can be beaten in 12 on the first playthrough.

RPGs have a lot of dialogues and stuff so they have to be a bit longer, like 30 hours. I was pleased with both Demon's Souls(30 hours) and DA Origins(85 hours for me) length.

How could u complete DS in 30 hours? You must be very skilled.

How many playthroughs are included in those 85 hours of Dragon Age?

Ha!

It was supposed to be 30(plus) hours, but the plus sign didn't print. But I had to change my character 2 times, because I wasn't satisfied with him, so it probably took more than 50 hours if you look at it that way..Plus I played co-op on shrine of storms on 2 bosses along with the one in boletaria palace called penetrator. I hated shrine of storms because of black phantoms. If I played offline, it would have taken me around 40-50 hours because I was good at Demon's Souls, I know this because I killed almost all the main demons on my first try (although reaching them took some tries). Exceptions: Maneater and tower demon and the best maiden astrea.

DA Origins 85 hours is a single playthrough, consisting of many side-quests, and all the in game Origins DLC, on nightmare difficulty.

If you know what to expect from a game and you know you like it it makes sense because you will get your moneys worth. But when it comes to something new you are taking a gamble and it makes sense for the informed consumer to not take a gamble on a game they might not enjoy.

Of course, if your rich who cares.

6-10 hours is ideal for me as I'm part of a Blu ray/Video game rental service which allows me to rent as many games as I want.

I thought you wrote it at first.

My opinion? Depending upon the genre, and the amount of win in the game, the game can be short I will still like it. Like Uncharted 2, which was short for my taste, because it was so brilliant, I had to go and play it again, and I am still playing it.

But Heavy Rain disappointed me in its length. Its a story based game, so I would have liked it to be a bit longer. I can't obviously enjoy pressing the X O all the time....even though there were different endings, it just wasn't that much of worth to spend 5 hours in.

Although for trophies and stuff I replayed it 2 1/2 times...

You beat HR in 5 hrs? O.o

If so, that's a record.

A lot of the game time is spent on walking around, on the ari and stuff, so I might have felt the game length a bit short than what it is.

Take KZ 2 for eg. It shows I clocked in 14 hours in its campaign, but it felt more like 10 hours because of restarting a checkpoint for dying and stuff. Still, for a fps, its very good length imo.

I beat KZ2 in 5 hours and I still died a couple of times....

That's generally what happens when you play on normal or easy.

Exactly and he probably played it on hard or even higher difficulty so why even mention it here, because even the shortest shooter will take more than 10 hours to complete on very hard, thus making the length of Killzone 2 not very special.

I never really understood the gripe about game length. I mean, some of my favorite games of all time (the Genesis Sonic titles) can be beaten anywhere from 2-4 hours. This doesn't stop these games from being sublime examples of the medium in which I love to play. The gameplay is pitch perfect, the music is incredible, the 16-bit graphics look just as wonderful as they did back in the early 90's, and I could play these game over and over again (which I do...). It's the content of the games that I love, and the experience of playing them again and again is always a treat. Once I was done beating Dr. Robotnik to a pulp (or got a Game Over...), I'd start all over again and discover something new that I never saw before, or go through the adventure all over again and just enjoy the time I had with the game.

Don't get me wrong, when you have a game like Super Mario Galaxy 2 that's still 15-20 hours long yet filled to the brim with exciting content and wonderful gameplay elements that are always surprising you, that's a beautiful thing. But the fact is, it's not that it's 15-20 hours that gets me excited, it's the fact that the game is just so fun to play and experience... that's what gets me ready to play.

I would pay $60 not to endure those 60 hours games you guys like. Give me 10 great hours, multiplayer, online and I don't mind at all.

Boo @ shorter games!!

I love to play my games a lot since I find them so enjoyable, I even get sad when they end sometimes - I just love games that last a long time since you really get a chance to bond with the game, instead of just playing through it then moving on to another one

In some games it takes forever to get all the things you want in it, it feels great when you finally achieve what you wanted VS just getting everything quickly

wow i disagree alot. that would mean in a sense that if a game is 30 hours it should be over 100 dollars to pay for what you get.

if they're good i don't care how short they are or how long they're just good.
