Sure, Princess Peach is weak and should have been replaced by Samus Aran of the Metroid series. That being said, none in the top 50 of Guinness's top 50 video game characters of all time had the impact of those 9 Nintendo characters and 1 Sega character. Not in my opinion has there ever been a more iconic top 10 then the one you just quoted me from.

Sure, there are new characters for new generations, but new generations don't matter in my opinion. Older generations laid the road for those after them. At least Guinness could show some respect and not name any character past the PS1 era in the top 50. Seriously.

I disagree with your last statment.

The trends which the characters you listed set were followed for sure, and they did lay the foundation for gaming, but so did other characters which weren't in the 8 bit era. And some had much larger impact on gaming...

The likes of Master Chief, Solid Snake,  Kratos...like em or not... went where Mario, Sonic and Donkeykog did not dare to venture and they were just as important influence on gaming.

Isn't Guisness supposed to be facts and records? A list of the top 50 characters in gaming is not factual its opinion. How did they come up with this list? Game sales maybe but that still wouldn't indicate individual characters. A poll well that also wouldn't be that factual but it would at least be more reputable then opinions of some writers.

Many magazines have listed the top 50 characters in gaming. They are interesting to read but they again are just opinion. How did they come up with this list?

Lots of characters whose popularity I don't buy: Samus Aran, Guybrush Threepwood, Sackboy, Eddie Riggs, Dante, Altair, Larry Laffer, etc... Unless there are some weird fanbases in the US or something. Donkey Kong and Ryu are certainly too low on the list. Donkey Kong is iconic and one of the defining characters of videogames, certainly bigger and relevant for longer than pacman; Ryu is featured in many games and stars or co-stars in several movies.

Many of the characters on the list have never been the most popular character at a given time in videogame history, Donkey Kong most certainly has been. Ryu perhaps has been too, if not then very close. Characters like Guybrush Threepwood, etc... have never been close.

Hrm... some of the list is decent, some of it I can't argue with (despite my personally not caring for the character), but there's a fair chunk of stuff that just does not belong. Soap? Nico? Shadow? Naruto? Things like this are why I don't get those Guinness gamer edition books- they're too devoid of fact.

Yeah... too bad that everyone has a different childhood, so most of those characters mean nothing for them. Not everybody shares your birth year you know
