I came into this topic and read through it, and the further in I got the more I could feel my blood pressure rising. This is as a person who abhorrs piracy - who bought a physical copy of Mother 3 long before the fan translation was finished, and bought a copy of EarthBound off of eBay when there's no good moral reason to do so.

Here I am, ready to go on a vicious tirade, pushing it to the limit of what i know I can get away with without getting banned - and then, light.

WereKitten and killergran (HOLY SHIT KILLERGRAN ISN'T DEAD) phrased the whole thing nicely and succinctly.

There are many cases where pirating is not morally justifiable (I have ehard arguments that piracy is never justifiable, even if I do not agree with them) but equating it with theft is disingenuous and flagrantly incorrect.

Edit: Carl I swear to God.

That's orthogonal to the issue of stealing vs copyright infringment.

If you are fined for speed you're supposed to pay for it. Paying or not paying can get you in trouble and /or can pose ethic issues, but certainly does not involve "stealing"

Fair enough. Depending on what it is, you're not stealing.

I think we should take a stronger stance against people who use avatars for games they probably aren't very good at.

Yeah, how would you have a clue how good I am at L4D2. I take it you're a proud pirate?

We used to do this - BengaBenga was particularly ruthless on this front - and I don't mind it as an idea. That's no excuse for headlines and articles perverting the dialogue, or people perpetuating ass-backwards sound bites (CARL).

Again: all for banning people who brag about their piracy. That's fine. But we should be clear and distinct that we're talking about copyright infringement and not theft.

Firstly, I don't need to pay for my Avatar at all. It's a screen-cap from the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Trailer that has been put on the Internet by Square Enix. It's not stealing. It's not pirating. It's not "sharing". Square Enix put it there, and they don't want you to pay to see the trailer. I win.

Secondly, I don't need to pay for my Sig neither. It's from Tekzilla, which I can watch for free on the Internet on Tekzilla's Website. Done by Tekzilla. They don't want me to pay.

You, downloading a copy of Final Fantasy XIII free from the Internet though. That's something you should pay for. Not get for free.
