Forums - Sales Discussion - *Where Would Gaming Be If Wii Failed?*

@digitalnasties those arent ports those are multiplat games, theres a difference and since they were all made with Wii in mind first Id say that thats where there true home is, not to mention i bet they sold better on Wii, you cant blame PS2 for that, not when it had some of the best games of any gen

Next the $ony fanboys will be saying the PC games market is softcore because it has shovelware too.

@ oniyide ... Most of the original games came out 2 or 3 years before the Wii, like ninjabread man and Anubis II.

@evolution 1ne  check and mate!!!

If the Wii failed and sold less than the Gamecube...where would gaming be now?

Sony claims that they were developing Move before the Wii even came out...I don't believe that one bit. Who knows though?

Anyway if Wii failed would Move and/or Kinect still be around? Would gaming stay the way it was during previous Gens or would something else unique be made in its place?

I would say move and Kinect would still come out, just with less of a push and less support.  Also Nintendo would be in serious trouble besides the DS.  That would have meant 3 home console failures in a row!

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

This is going to sound cliche as hell but gaming would be much better for core gamers and there would be no casual market if the Wii had failed.

There would be more core games and high profile titles and less lame party games and what not.

I'm not going to say I wish the wii had failed, but I really wish it hadn't turned the industry into a "casual" industry. I want more Halo, Grand Theft Auto, new high profile IP's, etc. and less "Kinect pillow fight" "Wii Party 27" and "Trip to the Zoo move" or whatever is coming out.

Damn straight! Gone would be all the casual weird-ass Japanese games like No More Heroes, Opoona, Muramasa, Little King's Story etc and we would all play real hardcore games like Halo, Call of Duty and GTA!

Haha I don't know if that's sarcasm or not but I do agree. I'm not a big fan of Japanese style games.

^^^thats funny i dont remember any exercise games on PS2, or dancing games, or Icarly, deer hunters, dora the explorer, Bacheolor games, biggest loser. oh thats right there werent any, care to elighten us on these shovelware ports. And actual video games ported from PS2 is not shovelware (Bully, Tomb Raider, RE4)

What do you mean by that?

he means the bullshit that wii fans spout when they say crap like the ps2 had the same amount of shovelware as the wii, which it didn't, and the shovelware it did have sold like utter shit unlike on the wii where it becomes the highest selling software in gaming history, furthering the wii userbase from that of the ps2.

Fact if the wii failed this gen would be short 90% of the crap shovelware it's now buried under.

edit: In my opinion

Thank heaven you stated it was your opinion

lol touche

in my defense, the ps2 had WAAAAAAY more core games than the wii (with way more being an understatement of epic proportions), which is why seeing shovelware for the system could be a hard thing to do. but on wii, finding a core game in the sea of shovelware is like finding a slightly darker strand of hey in a stack of hey. which is why bringing up the shovelware argument between the 2 is completely pointless.

as you can see one is 50% shovelware, and one is ZERO shovelware...

Well, if 10/20 of those wii titles are shovelware.....

With titles like Need for speed, madden, spider man, the lord of the rings (well... maybe, maybe not) , guitar hero, crash bandicoot.....

Good thing shovelware is a matter of opinion too

gaming would acually be better because 3rd pary devs would be making profit.

Many 3rd party developers went bankrupt because of HD flops.

Some went bankrupt with Wii flops. Some now focus on HD consoles because they've had so many failures on Wii.

I've yet to see a genuinely great development studio go bankrupt. All the studios that went bankrupt this gen were not putting out good games.

Also, take notice on which console does a better job at moving 3rd party software.

This is why a lot of developers avoid the Wii.

Well... that's another topic. But i do remember a few compnies that said something along the lines of "Thanks to the profit we made of X wii game, we could afford making X HD game"

I really don't remember any companies saying that. But its make me wonder why some developers put so much money in HD games.

I mean games like Metro 2033, Sniper, and others do pretty well with modest sales.  XBLA/PSN games also do very well with small budgets (atleast the good ones). Why some studios risk everything on a single HD game is beyond me.
