THQ: Games will cost $100 on average next console generation

Before the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, consoles tended to have roughly five year lifespans. This generation is going to be different, though: Mirosoft just released the Kinect, which they view as taking the Xbox 360 through at least a few new years, while Sony went on record at the launch of the PS3 that they viewed it as being a console that would be around for a decade.

Why are console makers suddenly being so conservative about releasing new consoles? In an interview with Eurogamer, THQ’s Danny Bilson basically puts it all in perspective: if Sony and Microsoft were to announce new hardware tomorrow, the price of games would have to shoot up way past $100 a copy in order to finance the teams.

“It still costs us a fortune to make games on this platform. If they’re going to up the scale, up the art, up the content, I don’t know how to make that and sell it to anybody for under $100 a game.” Wilson said.

“Who wants to do that? It’s bad for everybody.”

That’s a very interesting point, but it’s worth noting that in the 80s and early 90s, games already cost almost that much, and that’s without accounting for inflation. Games have been stuck at a price of roughly $50 or $60 for a couple decades now. Maybe it’s time for inflation to take its course?

DAmn I thought $60 bucks was outta contol....now they are talking 100 just for one game

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???!!!???

Piracy will SKYROCKET if this really happens.

I would definitly put on an eye-patch and hoist the Jolly Roger if this ever happens

THQ will go bankrupt if it attempts to lead the charge to higher prices.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

Fuck that shit!

Games will go up to $70 and £50 next gen, but that's 3 years off at this point. Actually the longer it is, the harder it is to even see a next gen ...

Oh I would spend One hundred Dollars on a fucking 500 hour game no Problem. The problem is games costing $50 to $60 being only ten to 20 hour games. Shame. Seriously a handful of games are actually worth their price these days.

Isn't it technically £50 already? Just the retailers don't have the balls to charge 50, so they all compete with each other and effectively bring that price down to around ~£36-39

Hmm not sure, possibly. I know COD and AC are £45 in some shops

They make a good point about the price of games not going up for inflation for the past 25 years, but still, 100 bucks is outrageous!

I think COD is the only game that I have seen that launched at over 40. I went to gamestation in vain hope that I can spend my gamestation gift card balance to get me some COD only to find them atrociously pricing that nugget at £45, I humphed, kicked the display Xbox and waltzed off.

Most games seem to have the RRP of 49.99, COD being exception at 54.99. But they still usually sell at like £37.99, so they can go "OMG LOOK ITS £12 OFF, WE'RE SO GENEROUS".

It's already at $70 for some games so I wouldn't be surprised, but anyone that buys full price games are suckers anyway :P
