Forums - Sales - Kinect's early success is a referendum on Nintendo.

When Nintendo was all fine and king and suposly unstopable in mid 2008, they went  away from doing new generation games like Donkey Kong, Wii Party, New Super Mario Bros Wii and doing more Motion Plus games and intead resorted in returning for their old failing ways, making games that despite being quality (or so said) like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Other M don't move hardware, and those were the same games that cause the bad sales for the N64 and GC, and were the reason the Wii struggled so much half of 2010. If they are inteligent enough, they will focus on new Wii Motion plus games that atrack new consumers to buy the Wii. If otherwise they keep on doing Super Gamecube games then they are doomed to fall.

Hey Beuli, unless I misunderstood it, it seems to me something is somewhat wrong with your argument in this post.  Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Other M development probably started arond the same time as DKCR and Wii Party development, so how can you say they went away from doing one type of game in order to do another when development for both types started around the same time?

DKC R and WP were all developed in less than 8 months and with less than a 3 millions budget like NSMB Wii (since they can fit in half of a CD), didn't you heard the trollers?

Well Nintendo did fail big time in one thing:  They didn't secure a Star Wars game that let you use the Wiimote like a lightsaber.  Kinect has already corrected this MAJOR error by Nintendo.

More LucasArts fault, i would say. Some devs were more than happy to pounce on Motion Plus's opportunities, but LucasArts sat by and twiddled their thumbs

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

We also need to consider that M$ is going to be heavily relying on 3rd party developers to bring life to Kinect.  These 3rd party developers have utterly failed the Wii.  Will they clean up their act for Kinect?

I don't blame the developers as much as I blame the consumers. Wii gets an endless wave of garbage because people keep buying them!

Hopefully Kinect owners will show better judgement in their software purchases. Hence, lets hope consumers cleaned up their act. So far so good in my opinion as the better Kinect games seem to be doing well.

The better Wii games sold best initially too.  The problem was content... when you're getting 90% garbage, not just the gems are going to float to the top.   And honestly, quality wise Kinect's launch is looking even worse than Wii launch did 3rd party wise.

I also wouldn't say MS is going to have to rely on 3rd parties though, early on the 1st party games (Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports, Kinectimals, Dance Central) have really taken the overwhelming lead and I'm not sure that's going to change in the future.  It really is just like Wii all over again, Microsoft's driving the platform almost single handedly.

I think you're comparing a casual gaming perhiperal to a console. The Kinect is just an add on designed to give the 360 a cutting edge casual gaming experience. The Wii is a stand a lone console and the launch software was intended to appeal to all audiences, casual and core. So yeah, I think we can say the Wii had superior launch software than Kinect.

But I do think the Kinect has much better casual games than what the Wii offered at launch. But hey, that's just my opinion.

I'd disagree, Microsoft has been branding, pushing, promoting and referring to Kinect as a "new platform".  It has a definite casual thrust (upfront at least), but I think a platform to platform comparison is still fair considering how it's being handled.  It's very much unlike how peripherals or controllers have been handled in the past, and much more like the system add-ons of old (like the Famicom Disc System or Sega CD), which were also considered distinct platforms to a large degree.

I agree with your other points though, Wii definitely had a more rounded launch lineup and arguably might higher quality (Zelda alone does that), but I'd also say Kinect's launch lineup is better from a purely casual perspective.  From the latter point, I'd actually say Kinect comes out favorably to Wii's first full year even... the only real "casual focused" games for Wii launch were really Wii Sports and Raving Rabbids (Japan also got Wii Play and Warioware for launch, but the west didn't until 2007).  Wii had a few licensed kids games too though (Spongebob, Cars, Open Season, Barnyard) which could fall under a casual banner, though not really all-ages like we've come to expect from modern casual games.

I think Kinect success more to do with struggling to find a stand alone Xbox over the christmas period.

So you think the fact that the 360 is enjoying its best holiday ever is a total coincidence which has little to nothing to do with Kinect? December YoY sales are up by something like 75% for a console which has been around for five full years already! Halo Reach is not responsible for that.

I agree with the general consensus of the thread. After two years of pushing the envelope, Nintendo got cold feet, failed to follow through, and started to focus on core and retro gamers. Microsoft has seized the opportunity and executed really well to scoop up some of its own expanded audience. Now we'll see if  Microsoft has the skill and the fortitude to follow through.

Nintendo should have preemptively attacked Microsoft by releasing their own motion cam tech a year ago.

The company behind Kinect's technology actually went to Nintendo first, and they declined it.  No doubt Nintendo has something else in works, possibly biofeedback based like the Vitality Sensor indicated, but I don't think we'll see it until Wii 2.   They can ride Wii out as is imo.

Wii 2 might come with a camera too though, Nintendo seems pretty interested in AR gaming going by 3DS...

The Wii has fulfilled it's promise. That's why more people bought it over Kinect and X-Box through the Christmas season.

No it hasn't. There are a lot of things that still can be done with WM plus. Don't you think would be good to have a dungeon crawler MULTYPLAYER game, where one can hold a bow and arrow and shoot it with accuracy, and you help your party to fight dragons or evil hordes of zombie dinosaurs? Or use a spear, a mace, or cool things like that.

WM plus still has a lot of potential, Ninendo just needs to see it and stop focusing on making games that people don't buy Wiis for.

They are making games that people buy Wiis for, hence this is why they had another stellar holiday season that topped both Kinect and Move.

And don't worry, they will have more games for next year that take advantage of WM , starting with Zelda.

This year first "Wii is Dooomed" thread?

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

@rolstoppable  tumble, beat sketchers, eyepet, sports champions, echochrome 2, those are games of the top of my head that cound NOT be done with Wiimote alone. THat nots my point anyway, my point is the neglect of WM while the MOve is getting alot of support. Im comparine two periphirals so I think its a fair comparison. YOu cant even blame 3rd parties too much on this, Ninty have made 3 Motion* games to date in a year and a half, that is pathetic no matter what spin anyone tries to put on it. Sony has at least 10 out in the wild in just 5 months
