Forums - Microsoft - KINECT is NOT selling because of $500 Million Ad Budget

This is just retarded. Why would microsoft have spent the money if it could sell the same? Do you realize what a 500 million dollar campaign is? I see it in the back of every cereal. Every other commercial, on some soft drinks even!....Plus early adopters always say the same thing on the Amazon site. Why can't some of you guys admit it is selling well because of the ads? Its not that big of a deal. Its still selling well and thats the point.

I doubt it. It is more than likely purchased with the 4GB 360 and seen as a deal. Most people I know who have it shelved it already.

It's amazing how often you can look at someone's name on this site and know almost exactly what they're going to say before you read their post.

Of course this goes for the OPer too.

That is EXACTLY what you can do with Wagram, if he's in a MS/360/Kinect thread, he's dissing it.

My favorite game this gen is a fucking Xbox game. I'm looking forward to many things Xbox next year. I'm just not looking forward to garbage.

Don't fall for his bait dude.

I know I saw my parents (ages 58 and 63) play video games for the first time in my life, and have a blast doing it on my Kinect! I just brought it out for my kids and my brothers, and then the whole family was laughing and having a blast. I know that the games are not hardcore, or anything remotely close. But, I found myself(and the rest of my family) laughing my ass off as my dad kept trying to figure out how to throw the javeline. Seriously, I was crying I was laughing so hard!

I wish people would just give up the console war thing for a while, and remember why we play video games in the first place; TO HAVE FUN!!! Trust me, I'm all about the hardcore gaming, but I don't think I've laughed that hard in years. And the best part about it is that my whole family was having fun with me.

Wrong.

The initial sales, i.e. Nov/Dec, are directly attributed to the massive advertising campaign.

The sales of 2011 and beyond (don't know why you think it will be around for "decades") will be based on word of mouth, which I agree is been very positive.

No, the marketing campaign included live demonstration. So many of the people who bought it week 1 tried it weeks previous to that. If it takes all of a week for a game to turn from hyped into flop because word of mouth travels even quicker with Facebook, txting, email etc today then it would have taken all of a week for Kinect to flop. The rest of the sales beyond the first week given the first week sales were a combination of hype/tried it can be considered educated purchases. Quite frankly the number of people who just bought it because it was on TV is so small as to be not worth talking about.

Would add that the marketing started right after E3 with the Kinect demo stations all over the country. Remember MS had Kinect in Alpha and Beta form available for people to try at MS Stores, Macy's, traveling roadshows and special events (state fairs, etc.). MS was pretty confident the impressions would be good and they were right.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

I know and was considering that part of the "massive advertising campaign". This is why Wii did so well out of the gate and MS did a remarkable job recreating that mass consumer sensation through these types of actions.

However, I still think that the Nov/Dec sales were predominately due to this advertising campaign and it will be Jan and onward that will see continued momentum predominately from word of mouth and Kinect parties similar to what Wii did.

Move has similar reviews as kinect, yet its sales are nowhere close to kinects.

So majority of the sales are still from the $500 million ad campaign.

Where I disagree is the timing of the advertising to word of mouth split. I would say that word of mouth predominated from the 2nd week with the advertising acting as a catalyst but not being the main driver of sales. I believe advertising combined with word of mouth drove sales higher, quicker than it would have otherwise, theres no doubt in my mind there.

It was like a chemical reaction:

Sales > word of mouth > sales > word of mouth with advertising speeding up the reaction as a catalyst. However once the reaction got up to speed the advertising is no longer needed, its a self sustaining reaction.

To me Move is to Wiimote what Blu-Ray is to DVD.

Let me explain, up to this day I refuse to pay more for Blu-Ray movies because they're just DVDs with a better picture quality that I barely notice. This is the same with the PS Move, it's just a more precise Wiimote nothing to get too excited about. I'm guessing that this is pretty much how the general public views Move, an upgrade from Wii remote but not a big new thing.

Kinect is a different story because it tracks your whole body and there's no controller. There's a bigger wow factor when people see it in action, it impresses more easily.

Signature goes here!

M$ wouldn't spend $500 million unless it was going to help xD

Yep, I think you are spot on. People who played it at my house where impressed and thats why they bought it. Not because burger King Impressed them. Word of mouth with this device is only going to get bigger and thats why I say we will see Xbox have no less then 15 million units off the shelf in this next year.

EXACTLY!  Kinect is gonna be an absolute MONSTER in 2011.

Mark my words, you heard it here 1st.

8-10 million kinects will be sold in 2011

Actually I heard it so many times before that its getting boring. Lets wait and see. Its is big already, and it will only grow, but how much? Thats still up in the air È&trade
