Actually it's both IMO. Monster Hunter won't be very successful without the Ad-Hoc functionality. That is main key to the success of MHP.

Yep, local multiplayer for a commuter society. This was also key to Pokemon's rise, without the social component, neither series would've taken off like it has.

It's also the reason why DQIX is the best selling game in the series.
