Looking at the installbase difference, MH became IMO the biggest IP in Japan. I dont think that even Pokemon can push that many systems anymore. Lets be honest, MH is the reason the PSP is the best selling system in Japan for some time now. its true, there are other pretty solid game on it there, but they all came because of MH. If Sony gets tehir act together, this success could easily translate into good PSP2 numbers in the land of the rising sun

It's still not bigger than Super Mario Bros, Wii Fit, Mario Kart or Wii Sports going by install bases (which all have done proportionately better on Wii than Monster Hunter has on PSP).  Ratio arguments tend to favor smaller userbases, this works in PSP's favor vs DS, but in Wii's favor vs PSP.  I'd say MH may have eclipsed DQ as the biggest 3rd party series now though.  It's not past Mario or Pokemon though, so it can't take the crown overall yet.  There's also stuff like Brain-Age and Animal Crossing that sold higher in the past, though we'll have to see how they'll hold up on 3DS.

And PSP2's success in Japan likely rests on MH.  I'm sure both Sony and Nintendo are doing everything in their power to land the series on their systems.

You're probably right, but if 3DS has a RE, a KH, a MGS, a Mario and some other big IPs in its first fiscal year, I don't think it would be easy for Sony to sell systems, even with a MH, and bad sales would mean less chance for future MHs...

Yeah, 3DS is already getting the sort of content you'd expect 3rd parties to push on PSP2, which is going to make Sony's job that much tougher.  In a way, Nintendo is really pushing 3DS as the successor to both DS and PSP, and the major 3rd parties are seemingly going along with that which doesn't leave much actual room for PSP2.  Sony's got a hard road ahead, and if they lose handheld Monster Hunter to Nintendo, I think PSP2's looking at a PS3 style market presence at best...

MH3P certainly is defying the whole 'sequels on the same platform sell less' theory. It's crazy.

Kinda like Call of Duty on the HD consoles, absolutely crazy sales with every iteration.

Also the "sequels on the same platform don't push HW" myth. And it's not close to being the only example...

It's not the only example but it certainly is the biggest. The HW push for it is even crazier when you think about it.

Yeah, I admit that I did not take into account the Wii, only the PSP and DS when I mentioned the above   I still stand by the idea that MH is a bigger system pusher then Pokemon ( the DS is where he is because of several massive franchises not just one), and Mario... well we still have to see where the Wii and NSMBWii will end lifetime ( if NSMBWii can pass NSMBs sales, and what effect DQX will have on HW), but at this point, I agree it seems that Mario is still the superior franchise

And as you mentioned, I cant wait to see how well Brain Age and Nintendogs will hold ( AC will probably do massive numbers no matter what). Are they one generation gimmicks or a lifetime force like Mario?

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Talking about 3rd party franchises, yes, Monster Hunter Portable has become the most succesful IP in the land of the rising sun. It has to surpass DQIX to achieve it, so it only has to sell 1.3M units more, and I absolutely think it will.

Talking about all kind of IPs, first and third parties, obviously NO. MARIO is the total king. It has just sold 6M in the NDS version. Pokemon is bigger tha MH too. Black and White sales may achieve the same mark than New Super Mario Bros. And of course, casual games like Brain Trainig or Animal Crossing are massive too, so Monster Hunter still has a bit of competition. GO LAGIARUS, EAT THEM'ALL!!

Well, honestly I'm not even sure if MHP3 pushed more hardware than Pokemon or Mario have this gen?  Famitsu comparisons of 1st week records for hardware pushing...

  • New Super Mario Bros.: 865,024 (DS: 300,121)
  • Pokemon Diamond / Pearl: 1,586,360 (DS: 292,938)
  • Monster Hunter Portable 3rd: 2,146,647 (PSP: 326,639)
...MHP3 did push more hardware, but it also had a new model PSP introduced with it, and it launched in the holiday shopping season (for comparison NSMB was launched in summer, Pokemon DP was fall, neither with new hardware or even new colors).  I'd agree that with DS it's really the sum of several major franchises that have pushed it so much (Brain Training, Super Mario, Mario Kart, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Dragon Quest, Tomodachi Collection), where as PSP only really has one comparable pusher (Monster Hunter), but that doesn't necessarily indicate MH pushes more hardware than the DS big hits would have individually.  If the impossible happened, and Pokemon Gen 6 was announced as a PSP exclusive, I think it'd push even more hardware 1st week if given similar advantages (holiday release, exclusive new model hardware).
I'm curious to see how Animal Crossing 2 and Brain-Age 3 do as well.  Personally, I expect both to be HUGE, and think both have a very good chance of matching their predecessors.  I also think Mario Kart 3DS might outsell MKDS, and maybe even the SFC original.

But who's to say that the PSP2 won't be getting similar (or even the same) games from the very same 3rd parties? Not that I care about the PSP2, I'll be getting a 3DS, but if they get support from the very same 3rd parties plus "higher level" graphics plus some exclusives like Uncharted etc, I don't think they will be in as much trouble as people expect.

Currently Playing: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Anticipating: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Mario Kart 7, Rayman Origins, Zelda SS, Crush3D, Tales of the Abyss 3DS, MGS:Snake Eater 3DS, RE:Revelations, Time Travellers, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Luigi's Mansion 2, MH TriG, DQ Monsters, Heroes of Ruin

Capcom loves the limelight and with all the buzz squarely on the 3DS right now it would be foolish for them to pass it up. I expect a new Monster Hunter title TBA at the January event if not sooner.

Unless there's a unified market already in place them as set by the west (think PS3 & 360) JP developers won't take it upon themselves to make one.  Like Wii and PSP (such a wasted opportunity!) I expect 3DS and PSP2 have largely different libraries in Japan.  3DS is probably going to be considerably lower spec than PSP2, which wouldn't help any real effort at multiplatform R&D either... it'd be the same "problem" you find on PS3 & Wii multi, you're holding back performance and interface to the lowest common denominator.

I do think PSP will get some choice support (and likely from many of the same devs as 3DS), but the platform's ultimate success really rests on if Sony can outmaneuver Nintendo and get Monster Hunter exclusively.
