I love your thread, I knew exactly what this will be about...I do find some of replies even more hilarious :P

Eitherway you are right...ps3 can't be saved now...it has gone from no gamez to too many gamez and some yet to be revealed. Good times

I would say all those games did "save" the PS3. It has healthy sales, and just had an 800k week. That would have been unheard of in 2007 (I realize that it was $400 then, but look at Christmas sales then). It sold 2M total in the month of December in 07, and it's already sold more than that thru the 18th of December this year. There's still 2 more weeks of data for the PS3, including Christmas!

I understand the point of this thread, but if anyone thinks the culmination of those games has nothing to do with the PS3s success, you're wrong. Never in Sony's history with the Playstation has any *one* game been the defining game that just boosts sales beyond belief, it's always been a bunch that make Playstations sell well

I would disagree with the thought that they all helped out in a major way. Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 probably had little to no impact over-all. I base this on sales and the fact that CoD is there to pull in and satisfy that segment. Heavenly Sword I don't think did much at all. Very popular for a hack and slash no doubt, but I would argue that it was mostly tiding people over for God of War 3. Not to say it didn't do anything, but that the latter series probably over shadowed its efforts.

Uncharted the game I doubt has done a ton either, but the series has certainly helped a lot. Of course it also launched super early so it might have had a bigger impact that what is easily percieved. I think Grand Theft Auto 4 didn't do much to save it either only because of how it performed on competitors consoles.

I think home just flat out failed as a "savior." It generated a lot of bad press, and hasn't really developed into much sinced then. Still free is free so it would be hard to complain as a consumer at the end of the day.

Gran Turismo 5 is a wait and see I guess. I am tempted to somewhat throw it in the KZ2/Resistance 2 category due to GT5 Prologue, but I think that is kind of a reverse situation. GT5P comign out so early has masked the full effects of what GT5 is doing. Of course it is also muted by the fact that the system hasn't needed a "savior" in a long time. Not since 2008 I want to say, but I am too lazy to dig up the specific numbers. I'd say it needed help when the GBA was beating it in the USA as a more solid point of reference for how early on I am referring to.

You last point is right and wrong. No game has ever saved a console period. If Goldeneye, OoT, Mario 64, and a few other titles couldn't "save" the N64 then there is no hope of any set accomplishing the task. You need a steady stream of good games. Exclusive and multiplats work perfectly. The goal is just to have enough content to offset the upfront purchase of the system.

To that end EVERY game helps out. Culdcept Saga is the reason I bought a 360. Nippon Ichi is why I bought a PS2. Big name and high profile games did nothing to sway me, but two developers who would shit themselves in excitement over a million seller pushed me over the edge. People are unique individuals that want specific and often unique elements in the entertainment. That is why there has been and never will be system saviors. Offer the product with a wide selection of games at a good price and you will get the public on your side.

How can something be "saved" when it didn't need to be saved in the first place.

My thoughts exactly.
I think I fell into a Pime Taradox after reading this thread.

I've been waiting to make this thread since a couple of weeks, because I wanted to see more numbers and not jump the gun prematurely.

Gran Turismo 5 was the last game left in the long line of PS3 saviors that were named in pretty much every thread concerning hardware sales and future lineups in 2007 and 2008. As time passed by, one game after another failed to do its job of saving the PS3 and now even Sony's by far biggest exclusive couldn't manage to turn things around. So why did Gran Turismo 5 fail to save the PS3?

The answer is quite simple, really. At this point in time the PS3 just doesn't need to be saved anymore. After a problematic launch period in late 2006/early 2007, Sony slowly, but surely, got its act together and the PS3 started to have healthy hardware and software sales on a regular basis.

Conegamer - I say that the PS3 will beat the DS next week in Japan  (for hardware sales) Forfeit is control over others avatar for 1 week.

Read people, read.

This Generation has taught us that a library of great games is more important than just one big game. There is no doomed for any of consoles folks. The Wii can sell 3rd aprty games, the 360 is as stable now if more than the PS3, and the PS3 can match all with its game library. I still believe this is the best Generation ever.
