Forums - Gaming - Sandbox Games are the most BORING and OVERRATED things in gaming

Open world games are the best games out there, now I know to never pay attention to any game you would recommened.

I love open world  games because I feel they draw you in like you are character more than any other type. They are fun to explore and you can do things in the order you want to do them.

Around the Network

I love them, but I must admit that they have a flaw, if I must stop playing them for a while, I tend to lose the thread and get somehow lost. But it's also true that if plots and quests are complex I lose the thread also in more linear games, if I must stop playing them for a while. All in all, I love them despite their flaws, the sense of freedom and the lack of compulsion relax me, the only condition is that their worlds be "alive" and that there be enough and interesting sub- and side-quests.

I could do this the whole day ;)

I'm sure the majority here would prefer sandbox over closed quarters anyday.

I mean they are horrible.you walk around ,drive around, ride horse around for many hours to get to a point and even when you get to the point they give a boring mission. the whole thing is very unispired and almost empty.(not that the worlds are not busy,,,cause trust me they are busy)

let's see what games i played to get to this point:

GTA4

assasin's creed 1 and 2

Infamous

Far cry 2

Red dead redepmtion

mafia 2

etc

all boring and repetitive after a while.

what in the wolrd do you people like about open worlds?to me it is very over rated.

not to mention that the graphical hit(worse graphics due to rendring big parts of city) is the icing on the cake.

i feel like something is wrong with me.Every reviewer loves sand box games and yet when i hear the game is sand box it is a big negative in my book.

in linear games they throw many exilirating set pieces at you so you are constantly entertained . not the same case in open world games.

for some games i agree with you

Most of the games you named are my favorite for this gen lol so yeh I don't agree, Borderlands was pretty fun as well.

I agree with you to an extent. IMO, open world games are boring if there's no sense of character progression or introduction of new gameplay mechanics while you play and advance in the world.

Let's take Infamous and GTA IV as an example. IMO Infamous is less boring as an open world game as your character gains new abilities that change up the gameplay quite a bit. Everything from navigating the world to combat change a fair bit as you go through the game. Sure the things you are told to do remain pretty much the same (go there and clear the bad guys) but how you go about it changes quite a bit. In GTA IV you've got driving and you've got guns... things get really stale. Everything ends up being "Go here. Kill these guys... go to the next story marker for the mission" and the way you kill guys is pretty much always a gun fight where you hide behind cover and shoot when you're clear. New weapons help to an extent but it gets boring a lot quicker.

All the games you listed above with the exceptions of  Infamous and AC tend to suffer from what I described above. After some time even Infamous and AC peak in terms of character depth and get boring quick after they do.

This is why I think Oblivion won me over so much. It's an open world game with a buttload of character depth and play styles. It's also why I think GTA: SA is the best of the GTA series. Your character is ever changing as you play the game (weapon, vehicle skills, physical attributes based on eating, working out, riding bike) and your character takes to your play style. Owning property and doing side stuff for them to benefit you also gives you a sense of developing your character and his surroundings.
