Forums - Gaming - Have you reached your game buying limit for a system this generation?

This is a bit long. I think there comes a time when you decide enough is enough. You realize that you have to many systems or actually to many games and that buying anymore might just be a waste or you might not have the money for it anymore. Or you just realize you won't be able to give much time to any new games or your collection. I think I'm reaching my point to a degree. I've been taking a look at the collection from this generation and I think I've got a few choices to make.

My Xbox 360 is rarely being used. I've been playing Fable 3 and while I've been waiting for that game for  it's the only game I was really looking forward to for the system in recent months. I just finished the main story as well and I won't be playing it as much now. I still have RPGS on the system I want to beat (Tales of Vesperia) as for a while the 360 was my RPG machine. Outside of that I don't really have a desire to buy anymore games for the system.  I have a total of 9 360 games a number of Xbox 1 games. I think I'm satisfied. I'll continue to look forward to Fable 4 and eventually I want to get Halo 3 to finish off the series but I'm in no rush at all. I think I'm done on this front.

I'm getting to that point with my Wii and that's my primary system.  I need my Nintendo fix but even with that my buying habits have really dried up. The last game I got was GoldenEye 007.  I'm returning Black Ops Wii unopened. I am interested in the Conduit 2 but I've dropped my pre-order in order to see how I feel when it comes out.  Outside of Nintendo games and Epic Mickey there is nothing left that I want to get and even within that the main games I'm looking forward to on the Nintendo front limited to Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, The Last Story and Xenoblade. The last two I'm not even sure will be released. I haven't even picked up Metroid Other M, Super Mario Galaxy 2, or DKCR. I might play Kirby Wii but I bought that for my sister for Christmas and not for myself. She and my mom are the big Kirby fans in the family.

My PS3 is limited to just Batman: AA, Infamous, R&CF: Tools of Destruction, Sacred 2 and Final Fantasy XIII. Batman came with the system and I got R&CF used. Both I haven't even touched yet. I haven't touched Infamous in a long time but I do want to finish one day. Sacred 2 and FFXIII have gotten the most play. At the moment I can't think of a single game I want for the system now. That used to be DC Universe Online but even that is kind meh to me now.

I've told myself next time around only one system is being bought and it's going to be Nintendo's. The 3DS I'm looking forward to and if it's what I expect it to be I might actually make it my primary gaming platform as I'm finding less and less time for console gaming. That's on the handheld front. Yet on the flip side I have a renewed interest in PC gaming. I've slowly been updating over the years but I think it's time I do another big investment. Been 4 or 5 years since I did that. Games like Divinity 2, The Witcher 2 (enjoying the first one), Starcraft 2, the new Deus Ex, etc have all renewed PC gaming for me.

So has anyone else noticed that they've simply had enough with one system or another this generation? Not that you dislike it (or maybe you do)  just that are perhaps currently satisfied or simply no longer in a position to continue investing in it?  That you current collection is all you really need until the next generation? Etc?

Really curious to see what others have to say.

My DS has like 1-2 games left.

Wii will be saving up for the dry summer with the Christmas game harvest.

I think once i pick up fable 3 for my 360 and GT5 for my ps3 for christmas I'm going to be done buying games  for the forseeable future. I have quite a few games I've been buying for my pc, ds, ps3 and 360 for very cheap that I've yet to  have time to play or finish. That combined with the fact that I now probably average a few hours a week playing on my consoles makes me feel buying new games won't be worth it for 2011. Especially since the only announced games for 2011 I'm mildly intersted in are infamous 2 and portal 2.

You're pretty typical. Most launch year users buy 4-5 games year one, 3-4 games year two, 2-3 games year three, 1-2 games year four, and 0-1 games year five. Fortunately, most new users come in years three to five. Generally speaking the later the users buy a system, the fewer they buy.

Might I suggest downloadable games though? Some of them rock - probably 30 good ones on each system now. They're cheap too - I've bought seven this year for like $60, and only two retail games for $100. I do plan to buy a ton of retail games shortly (5-10), but downloadable games are a good way to go - they have more "pure fun" in them than most retail releases and can be played as long as you want.

i trade alot of gamers. when they beg me to trade in my games i go home i look at them and ask "will i ever play them again' and usually its 'no i wont' so i take them in and trade since games are just far too expensive here in Australia. Currently i have 8 games in my collection but i have traded and bought so many more.

But i haven't really been buying an heap of games. I bought 3 last year. And around 11 this year majority imported at 50% cheaper or old games.

So basically i have gone reverse instead of buying less i am buying more since i bought my PS3 a few years back. And 2011 is no expection were my funds are going to be burned up because there are SO many games i want next year.

so to answer your question. No because i had very small controll over my gaming over mos tof my life 1995-2008 with my older brother in control of the PS1, PS2 and the 360. But when i got my PS3 i am basically hooked onto gaming and now with the ability to buy the games i want i am buying alot of games this gen since i missed out on so many last 15 years.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Yep...this generation has gotten old to me. There's no innovation to be had anymore. I'm from the old school, and I think my 5 year, internal clock has struck. We need a new generation imo. Everything's sort of gone stale.

I'll probably buy The Last Story, and then be done until the new consoles come out.

well the new generation wont come until 2012 with the possible Super Wii but even that isn't that much of an innovative leap in technology  and SONY said they wouldn't really release an new console till 2015 and with Microsoft investing 500 million in marketing for the kinect and countless more for the kinect we wont see an new box from them until around 2013-2015 region.

So you have an long wait. but its been that the end of the gen is always the best and we have around 2-5 years to go so the best is yet to come. But the fact that gens are lasting Longer then ever may be problem for gamers.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

For this year, I've purchased Monster Hunter Tri, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M, Golden Eye 007, Naruto: Clash of the Ninja Revolution 3 (don't laugh; it's a pretty solid fighting game) and I'll be receiving Donkey Kong Country Returns in the mail soon, along with Super Mario All-Stars next month. Also, I got Wii fit as a gift xD The only game for Wii I want after that is Zelda: Skyward Sword, and then I think its safe to say I'm done with Wii games unless we get a worthy Star Fox game, or another Donkey Kong Country perhaps. It's clearly been a very Wii-focused year for me that I haven't experienced since 2007.

For 360, I might eventually get Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Left 4 Dead 3 (if the rumor is true, I definitely WILL be snagging this ASAP), and perhaps Gears of War 3 (maybe). Oh, and the future Assassin's Creed 3. =) After those, I can't think of anything else I want. Bought Halo: Reach and TES: Oblivion this year which are great, and I got the new 360 Slim model (250GB) which I'm practically in love with. 2008 and 2009 were very much 360-focused years for me.

For DS I'm pretty much only interested in Golden Sun (50/50 chance of getting this or not) and Black and White Pokemon. I'll be done after that. Got WarioWare DIY and Mario and Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story earlier this year with my DSi XL. Got a lot of good games in my collection to replay for a while. 2009 was an extremely DS-focused year for me along with the 360.

Overall, I agree. I think I'm also just about done with this generation in terms of buying games. I probably won't even get all of the games I mentioned except for definitely Zelda, L4D3, AC3, and Pokemon B/W. I'm more than satisfied with my collection and after how much I was involved with the current generation, I don't think I'll be participating too much in the following one. I definitely won't be purchasing a 3DS for a while, probably not until it has a pretty good price cut.

Generally I get more selective about which new releases I pick up by this point, having bought all three platforms near debut with the exception of the 360 (fall 07).

I will still pick up games that caught my interest on a good sale, but the longer a platform's been available, the more quality games there are to choose from and that leads to the inevitable backlog/pile up of unplayed or barely played games.

I'm pretty much done with the Wii. I don't play any of the games at all, and I saw this coming in 2009. No More Heroes 2, Metroid and Zelda were the last of the titles I wanted to play. I barely played NMH2 and MoM was a bust so it's Zelda and done.

The 360 still has Gears 3, but after the disappointment of Gears 2 (never bothered to finish), unless the game is universally rated "M for Magical" it's not getting my $60. Platinum Hits $30 or nothing. Everything else is multiplatform, which means unless the 360 version is better than the PS3 version and the PC version is somehow screwed up, it will be mostly cricket chirps playing on my Xbox for 2011.

That is, unless Kinect gets its first legitimate killer app that isn't Chuck E Cheese style fun for the entire family...

The PS3 is my default media and movie player. It gets any multiplatform that doesn't run better on the Xbox that is also somehow gimped on PC. It happens. SCE IPs have been heavy favorites this generation with several good ones in the pipes for 2011. It won't be boxed until I either stop watching movies or I buy a more convenient media player/BD player.

As far as PC goes, there are no "generations" to speak of and you never stop using it. About the only dust it collects is whatever junk it Hoovers in through its fans. You upgrade video cards when either the performance of the latest hardware crushing game you *must* play doesn't play acceptably (depending on your personal standards for performance), or when you catch a deal on a better video card that is simply "too good to pass up."

"2015?" Really? I hadn't read anything definitive. Just a lot of statements suggesting both MS and SCE wanted to prolong this generation for as long as humanly possible.

That "Ten Year Plan" of SCE's that everyone not belonging to the SDF scoffed at is now looking like reality.

I agree that some of the best games in terms of polish should be yet to come, but the real question is who will be there to keep the soft sales numbers up? New users or the die hards who have already been playing for the past four or so years?

As far as hardware updates go, if that matters so much to some, those people may shift back to PCs so they can spend as much as they want as often as they want on keeping the most up to date hardware.

With any luck the next gen of consoles will be a little bit more than just "faster GPU, faster CPU/more cores, more RAM/VRAM" otherwise the only thing worth buying the next gen of consoles for will be the first party exclusives and occasional third party exclusive.

In the meantime, SCE and MS need to ratchet up the online services and further integrate their consoles into the home media center to make them something indespensible even if you aren't buying the most recent $60 retail game.
