I just checked, that is the highest week two of November value for hardware Wii has had in Japan. Wii is actually up by 60% over this week of 2009 in Japan. Bodes well, as the Red Wii came out Nov 11, and so it should hold for at least one more week at a good level. Then Mario Sports Mix comes during the last week of November, which is when seasonality begins to lift all hardware in Japan. Nintendo has timed this fairly well.

Also, YTD Jan 3 - Nov 14 for Wii in 2010: 1.14m

Same Period of 2009 for Wii: 1.09m

Wii is still up by 50,000. If DKC pushes about half the amount of hw as NSMB Wii (60k in launch week), figures may end up close to 2009 yet (about 2m).

For PS3 YTD Jan 3- Nov 14 is: 1.19m

Same time in 2009: 1.13m

PS3 still up by 60,000 (probably down to 50k for the 11/21 week). No Final Fantasy XIII push though (probably 100k of the 244k FFXIII week) - GT5 week will put PS3 up maybe 60,000-75,000 over its late 2009 level with an 80k push, so PS3 may be close to its figures last year also (1.8m) in the end.

So despite all the doom and gloom about Wii sales this year in Japan... It's not really doing bad, it's just that the PS3 is doing tremendously well?

No they're both doing poorly in Japan. Selling 2m consoles in Japan is the equivalent of selling 4m in the USA. They're not terrible numbers, but they're fairly average numbers. The difference is Wii is doing average numbers in Japan after having an excellent year (4m) and a good year (2.8m).

For me, Japan figures, when you look at history are essentially:

4m - A to A (NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, GB, GBA, DS all got here)

3.2m - 4m B to A-

2.4m - 3.2m  B- to B

1.6m - 2.4m  C- to C

0.8m - 1.6m D- to D

0m - 0.8m - F

The PS3 peak is in the C range (2.3m) to date, the Wii peak about B . That is why publishers have supported portables in Japan - DS did 7m (!!) two years in a row, and PSP has had a B year or two, while the consoles have sold poorly against historical levels.

You could argue that for a second place console, the PS3 is doing well. But the PSP, which is second place in the handheld department, is beating the wii on a weekly basis...

I have to say that consoles this gen have been a major disappointment. Imo it's because the split in 3rd party support (DQ and MH for Wii, FF, MGS  and the yakuzas and mousou's for PS3). Also the huge decline in many games like PES, mousou, samurai warriors, tales, power pro baseball, etc....  helped in this decline

Historically the dominating console always had everything in japan. This time it was kinda like the Wii was leading without really having any support. And i guess the PS3 support was a bit too late for the PS3 to really get to PS2-like numbers. Even for all the PS3 support, i dont think it can be compared to what the PS2 had, even marginally... Handhelds have stolen the thunder in Japan! 3DS will probably see this domination continue

Wii is doing very bad comparing to previous years. PS3 is doing very well comparing to previous years. However, it's yet to see if a very good PS3 year can outsell a very bad Wii year in Japan. (It didn't happen last year)

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
