Forums - General - STAR WARS TOURNAMENT: Episode 4: A New Hope. Rate it!

9.8/10 - Well for one it had one of my favorite mistreated actors of all time Mark Hamill (Cock Knocker!) in his first role. Secondly this is the only movie that I can keep watching over and over again. I don't want to go into each section but this has many culturally important scenes and defined a whole decade.

9/10

Wonderful movie.

Simply wonderful.

I know I had a reason why I'm not giving it a 10.... but I forgot what it was... :/

9/10. It's almost inconcievable that George Lucas could make something this good. God, he was so much better when he was cribbing from Kurosawa and WWII movies than he is now that he just cribs from himself.

He was brilliant in his early years in my opinion: THX 1138, American Graffiti, Star Wars. Lucas directed and co-wrote 3 of the best US movies of the 70s (a decade which had plenty of great US movies).

My theory is that on some level he's aware of how much he sucks now and he resents his younger, talented self, and that's why he fucked up all the original Star Wars movies by adding that CGI garbage to the rereleases. Ditto with Spielberg and E.T.

Lets not forget the possible reason for this is that George Lucas is not a good director; he never directed any of the original triliogy, but he did direct the prequels. imo this explains why everything was different, not to mention the man is obsessed with CGI and its obvious in the orginals where hes put CGI in, and it has spolied it imo.

As usual you spew hate without any research.

George Lucas directed Episode 4.

Appologies, Lucas did indeed direct Episode 4, i forgot he did. havent seen it in ages.

and "spew hate without any research", listen man that was uncalled for, there are loads of things i like and will discuss with respect, like when i just talked about the twin suns scene on Tatooine, or how much i love timothy zahn's star wars books. i've posted on your other threads giving reasonable arguments of why i think Episode 1 or 2 are not good films, but maybe youve missed those!

if you want to discuss why i dont think FF13 is a good game then we can discuss that on another thread, i will articulate the evidence nad provide you with youtube vids that support my argument.

however feel free to say what you like, i dont really care tbh. i will continue to debate rationally.

I have seen you do it to many things on the forums, I am justified in making my comment, if you want to discuss this further you can PM me.

And please don't provide youtube support, the last time you did that comparison between FFX and FF12 you picked the worst scene from one game (FFX) and compared it with one of the best scenes from the other game (FF12), which was unfair.

9.5/10

I could write an essay on why this is one of the best films of all time, but I'd rather keep it short. As with many people, this was the first Star Wars movie I saw. It quite possibly changed my life, that's how important it is.

From the opening with the music taking you straight into the action as a Star Destroyer is chasing down the Rebel ship, to the final scenes after the Death Star has been destroyed, there's not a bad moment in between.

The characters are all simply brilliant. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Chewbacca. They're some of the most instantly recognisable names in the history of cinema, and I don't really see the point in saying much more than that.

So why only 9.5/10 if I can't fault it? Well, I've got to leave somewhere to go...

Why are people rating this film below a 10 just because the next one is better?

Does the next film being better somehow make this one worse?

There needs to be a scale

If one is better they can't have the same score....unless that one is just better by a bit.

How much better is Episode 5 for you than Episode 4?,....if tis much better than Episode 4 should be 9.9...while EPisode 5 is 10.0

Otherwise its hard to separate your ranking

Unless you stick with the score you give at the time

Fair enough, if you are justified in your comment prove it, as you have asked me to. i'm not going to PM you, if have something to say, say it so everyone can see its not me whos instigated a confrontation, and that its your arguments that are unjustified.

If you want to develop a rational argument then its up to you to prove me wrong using youtube, interviews, developer diaries, etc. if you cant do that then dont get upset because other people can, i say other people because i'm not the only person whos used that particular scene as evidence.

9/10

Really just a brillant movie with very few flaws to it.

Don't PM me then, I am not having an argument about other issues in a Star Wars ranking thread, that much I will make clear.

And please no-one apart from you keeps using that laughing scene from FFX as a means to justify something, your comparison was horrendously flawed, in effect you compared the worst from one game with the best from another game.
