Forums - Website Topics - I think VGChartz needs a new job

The other day, after reading a news article, I realised that VGChartz needs a new position.  There should be somebody to go over articles, reviews and what not, to check for grammatical/factual errors.  Most of the writers and staff members are pretty good, but no matter how good you are, errors are going to get through. For this reason, several major web sites and publications have an editor go over each and every review/article before it is published.

What do you think?  Is this a good Idea?  I think it would go a long way towards making VGChartz look more professional.

There we go, I just copy edited your post.

I'm one of the jerks that edits pretty much everything but reviews (news, features, editorials, sales articles).  I'm sorry we've failed you.

Like Kantor said, news is time-sensitive so it gets published really quickly.  Same thing with sales articles.  If I can find the mistakes before the news goes live, I edit it then, but if I'm say... asleep (can't edit 24/7 for an international crew of writers in different time zones with different first languages and different levels of English fluency), I copy edit everything after I wake up or when I get home from work or school.

But thanks for pointing out the crappy job I do.  Now I'm gonna go cry into my Count Chocula and commit seppuku.  Or maybe I'll just punch one of the writers the next time I see them, probably some time next year.  Naw... that'll take too long.  Seppuku it is.

if we didn't have editors my reviews would be unreadable messes of typos and non sense. So thanks editor team!

My biggest complaint with news article is that they seem awfully bias(not to any particular console, kind of all over the place) sometime, and often with headlines or comments with in that seem to want to bait people. I dont even read them any more to be honest.

Yea, some news headlines like the "PS3 Firmware 3.50 disables third party devices" are just wrong and needlessly sensational. That and other ones really left a bad aftertaste in my mouth..

The "person xyz said - insert flashy quote (out of context) here" news feel quite superfluous to me as well..

Lol at this thread - I thought as a team we did a pretty good job with editing...

Can't you take any criticism?

Even though I read far more news articles on VGC, I notice more errors on IGN than here on a consistant basis. So if VGC needs improving in this area to "look more professional", what does that say about IGN who is considered among the elite gaming sites?

We always take criticism on board, I just said I found it funny somebody suggesting we should look to employ editors when we already have a large team of copy and content editors and have done for a couple of years. The occasional mistakes definitely get through - on news pieces especially - but you'd certainly notice the difference if we didn't have any editors.

well, I was mostly referring to the news items.  It's very rare that I read through a news item and don't find at least a couple grammatical errors.  It's not really a big deal, most people probably wouldn't even notice.  I'm an English teacher though so these errors kind of pop out at me.

Honestly, I notice very little grammar and spelling errors in VGChartz' articles. Most of them are written very well. However, English is not my native language, and when someone spots many errors, I think it's valuable to take into consideration.

Tally-ho!

I'll take this opportunity to point out that if for whatever reason you want to be a copy editor (it's an unpaid job), contact Naznatips or CaptainHavok.

As others have said, it's unreasonable to expect every news article to be edited, as we need to get them posted as fast as possible and that would be quite hampered if someone went over each one.

I think our editors (myself included) do a good job within the confines of the situation.
