Forums - Sales Discussion - PSOne console sold 130 million!

It sounds perfectly reasonable for Sony to increase production of the PS1 from 2.7 million to 27 million one year before the discontinue it. Just as reasonable as the  tooth fairy giving cash for teeth and the pot of gold filled by leprecauns at the end of the rainbow.

why would that not be reasonable if they were expanding the playstation platform into other regions that never had a playstation before, and why not already at that time the playstation one was already cheap for sony to produce and had tons of software already. introduction of the playstation brand with a PS1 would be a great start. for expanding into other areas. They are doing the same with the PS2 there are countries in the world that just got the PS2 for the very first time released in their country.

30M in 7 months... loool wtf Ps1 officially the Fastest Selling Console ever :D

they wound down production but is it so hard to think in 12 months time that 28 million unit's were produced for a machine that at the time was already 10 year's old?

esp. for places that are just now getting the PS2 for the very first time..but when did those same countries got their very first playstation 1?

YES! You're talking about the peak production rate that the Wii had when it was selling its fastest, and more than PS2 at any time to date. It's ridiculous to think that much production would be done for a console that was on its very last legs when the PS2 was still popular and the PS3 was nearing launch, not to mention PSPs as well.

Also it's incredible that you think the 102.49M number from http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps_e.html is just for fat PS1s. Check out the worldwide total during the 2000 calendar year. Do you also believe Sony produced ~30M fat PS1s while they also made a similar amount of slims?
1) Oh look! http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_e.html PS2 has sold 161.88M units!!!

If that's not enough logic for you, look at http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/er.html
From http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/qfhh7c000000kxze-att/00q4_sony.pdf  we have "Total worldwide production shipments of PlayStation and PS one hardware were 9.31 million

units for the year compared with 18.50 million units for the previous year, resulting in cumulative

shipments of 82.23 million units as of March 31, 2001." 2) which matches the earlier chart exactly for 2001 March 31.
and  from http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/qfhh7c000000kkww-att/01q4_sony.pdf "• Worldwide hardware production shipments:

→ PS 2: 18.07 million units (an increase of 8.87 million units)

→ PS one: 7.40 million units (a decrease of 1.91 million units)" 3) brings us EXACTLY to 89.63M, which is what the worldwide total would be for 2002 March 2002 if it weren't for the typo showing it as 39.63.(It's obvious however by adding the regions together, unless ~50M units were unmade and suddenly remade over a 6 month span)
finally http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/04q4_sony.pdf is the very last mention of PSone shipments.

As Viper1 rightfully keeps stating, Sony is required by law to report these things in their financial statements, so there's simply no way they'd magically gain 27.5M units.

Now kindly accept the facts and Dille was either misquoted or confused.

just because you want to agree with Viper is ok with me, but as for fact's that's once again you and his opinion...PD stated 130 million....the talk about peak production rate and all that is just your Opinion PD stated what he did and it was a full year sony's goes from march to march..which as of march 2005 the PS1 totals was already at 102.49 million sold world wide.so if it was the same why list anything past 2005 if there was no sales?.so Sony is what going to keep production for a full year but not sell anymore unit's?

You obviously didn't read anything beyond the last sentence, nor do you seem to have any knowledge of Sony's financials/shipments. They listed everything(PS1,PS2,PS3,PSP) up to 2007 March 31 because that is when they switched their method of counting "shipped" units from those that were produced at manufacturing plants to those that were sold to retailers.(Also anytime you hear them say "sold" they are talking about their shipped numbers, unless they explicitly mention "consumers" or reference NPD, Gfk, or other tracking firms and then it is sell-through. Same goes for Nintendo and Microsoft)

Now please explain the 3 facts(yes using Sony's own financial statements are facts, not opinions) I've bolded for you.

Btw, you're also asking us to believe according to the original source that software across all PS platforms is only 2 billion units, when it should be 3 billion. Tpyos, they be happening.

an no one company can ramp up production..gotcha..look i love your dedication on viper's behalf..i really do..but you and viper are not @ Sony

PD is so if say microsoft or Nintendo CEO's would have stated their number's would you be putting this much effort to debunk them also..?

some how i doubt that very much..LOL.

If you notice they do not list in all those wonderful reports you like posting which areas the PS1 was being shipped to nor to the expanded areas that the playstation platform was introduced to. like i stated many times before in march 2005 sony list's 102.49 million was sold world wide..so that leaves a full year's worth of production! how many more units world wide were produced in that one year's time?

PD stated more than 130 million playstation 1's were sold world wide..if you do not think he is telling the truth ask him your self you an viper seem to have your connection's..lol

Shipped =/= sold.

So you're telling me Sony reports how many units they produced in a fiscal year, but didn't count the ones they sent to the expanding markets? Yes I would be doing the same if it were Nintendo or Microsoft, especially when it's so easy to do so.

But at this point I'm convinced you're either trolling or too ignorant so I'm done with trying to convince you.

Its a misquote. PS1 production stopped at 102.5m, which Dille likely stated as 103m in the interview. Gamasutra then misquoted Dille because Gamasutra is unreliable and unfamiliar with the history of the industry, mishearing 103m for 130m.

There were about 22m PS1s in SE Asia and Japan, about 45m in the Americas, and almost 40m in the rest of the world.

Gilgamesh I really wish you would show some sense before you posted stuff like this - all of our old data is tied to historical annual reports that have to be dead on for tax purposes. You're opening a huge can of worms here, and misleading tons of users.

No your the one saying that im not. Im saying that if at march 2005 the ps1 was already sold 102.49 million world wide. but sony for a full year after that date still produced more ps1 unit's why would there not be any more sales data? since both you and viper are already claiming that it stand that sony's still only @102.49 million when they were already at that mark a year prior to production being completely halted.

what you and viper are stating is after 2005 the production of a full year's worth of ps1's were null an void. there was no sales so why count any production after march 2005!

because that is what your claiming.
