Sony entered the global gaming industry with the Japanese release of the original PlayStation in December of 1994. More than 11 years and two more consoles later, the electronics giant has pulled the plug on its first console, ceasing all production of PS units. Last September, Sony announced that the original PlayStation and its PSOne redesign had surpassed the 100 million units sold milestone.

Do you read your own thing? "Last September, Sony announced that the original PlayStation and its PSOne redesign had surpassed the 100 million units sold milestone."

and did you read the date..so

Last September that would be sep 2005

so they still produced the PS1 slim until march 2006 that's 7 months if you notice they were shipping how many ps1's per quarter?

the PS1 and the PS1 slim passed 100 million combined upto 2005 so from the tale end of 2005 to 2007 the PS1 slim sold an added 27 million more PS1's.

You know what I am not going to bother, if you actually believe they sold 27 million more ps1's for the last 2 years of console life (Something the ps2 won't do in its last two years or the DS), than I feel sorry for you, and hope you never do forecasting for any company.

Edit: To clarify forecasting statement is based on the fact that person estimating very very very extereme abnormal growth for a near dead console.

hey think about that for a sec.where would those ps1 slim's be shipped to?

Sony has been expanding the Playstation platform in other countries world wide that may not be able to buy the PS3 but could buy the PS1 slimline.

Tell me, what sounds more plausible?  They sold 2 million units from Sept 2005 to 2007 or that they sold 30 milion units in that time frame?

notice how many they were shipping of ps1' slims per Quarter?

They sold just 29 million PS2's in the same period.  Do you really think they sold 30 milion PS's?

Hmmm....So it looks like Dille meant 103mill units vs 130mill units. Understandable typo, but one that would require a fix.

So it's 103 mill PS1's (including 28mill PSOne consoles) and 146 mill PS2s. Mighty impressive.

Oh Ya, this whole arguement makes me seem like a sony troll. So I am going to respond positive. 103 million and 146 million for the two consoles that deserve it. Seriously best consoles ever for me along with DS, N64 and SNES (You have my top 5).

Ok let's see

From September 2005 till today, 30 Million psones were sold....

From November 2006 till today, around 37 million Ps3 were sold....

Oh yeah, it totally makes sense.

Does someone know how many ps2 have been sold since Sept. 2005? I mean, i just want to reinforce what it looks like a bulletproof theory.

do you really think sony did not expand the playstation brand into other countries that did not have a playstation 1 at the time?

look there are places that this site does not have sales data for from arround the world..Sony has stated they sold through 130 million plasystation 1's through to the consumer. you can say that you do not agree with Sony's sell through number's but that could go for any number of companies.

as for myself i can only go by what they have stated, Sony has expanded into 6 more countries just recently within the last year for just the PS3 being released for the very first time.

So we have....

37M Ps3 (a year less)

30M Psones

29M Ps2

Totally makes sense...
