Forums - Nintendo - Why we should welcome Samus talking.

The reason why I'm always cautious about Nintendo characters being given voices is because they've got a pretty terrible track record of it.

I can't play something like Mario Sunshine or DK64 without cringing at some point due to awful voice acting, and Slippy remains one of my most hated gaming characters with his incessant inability to actually use his Arwing with multiple death bringing weapons for anything other than getting shot at, but I digress...

Samus has mainly been silent for a reason, the games have been about isolation. When you're isolated, you don't talk much. Pretty simple really. Now with Other M they seem to be introducing character interaction, so it would make sense for her to talk more in that instance. But we remain cautious, because past history suggests another cringe-fest, never mind the concern that they may be changing things like the gameplay simply to suit the desire to have her talk, and it remains to be seen whether that would be a change for the better.

We'll just have to await her words with baited breath...

maybe if he didn't sound so vindictive, whiny, and outright childish I COULD give him a little respect. And I'm not even getting into how much he just plain INSULTS people all the time. He has never, EVER earned respect so he deserves to be called out for what he is: a man-child throwing tantrums and acting like his "opinion" is sacred.

He does not insult people all the time,. At worst, he takes occasional jabs. You would have to literally show every single post of his has an insult. EVERY ONE.

And the tone of his blog is not the way you potray him. You don't have to like his points, but making a strawman of how he writes just makes you look whiny and vindictive, while projecting it on him.

He's even stated this game might be good, just the focus should be on exploration of strange worlds, not on characterization.

And from what I've seen of the gameplay, it looks as though the explrations has been reduced, and having lots of corridors to run down.

Running down corridors and shooting stuff was a good amount of Metroid games in the past. Corridors outnumber central areas handily in any given Metroid game (except possibly Prime Hunters, arguably the least Metroid-y game)

he does the exact same thing you CLAIM I'm doing. Like saying "I'm convinced that the Zelda team hates the core gameplay of Zelda and does everything they can to not use it" or calling people looking forward to Other M "Sakamoto Cultists". Pachter chewing him out a month or two ago really should have made him reexamine his mindset.

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand (I really, really apologize for that divergence, I really do), I am very much looking forward to how Samus is conveyed.

Pachter chewing him out was actually a very good thing, as it proved that his method is getting results. If he were just a fringe internet nut, why not ignore him like all the other fringe internet nuts? Indeed, i thought it was monumentally stupid of Pachter (and other analysts who have responded to him) to do so, because it was their choice in that moment to see whether he would remain a fringe nut or not, and decided to validate him.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I agree with you, the real problem is the talking, she's silent because she's in a game where she has no one to talk to, which is the way Metroid is supposed to be.

If they want to have her talk, then it would be filling out a personal log or something, or issuing commands to her ship; and has time goes on, it's her voice that gives away that the solitude in a world where everything wants to kill her, is slowly driving her insane.

Veder Juda is hand crafted from EPIC FAIL, and is a 96% certified Looney; the other 4% is a work in progress.

But those were not just flat areas before, that these appear to be.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Samus has been silent, largely, only in the audio spectrum, and even that's not completely true.  She narrated quite a bit in Fusion, for instance.

You have a point that Nintendo's choices for voice have, at times, been pretty jarring.  But they're never going to get better if they don't work at it and gradually start improving.  Resident Evil 1 had some truly monstrous voice acting (and even live action nonsense), but Capcom kept at it, and the voice work has, over the years,  drastically improved across all their titles.

How did she not have  a soul before? How?

I'm ok with limited cinamtic shows that serve purpose as well as talking where applicable. If she is rambling during her typical solo missions, then she will just seem like a psycho. Silence is best during the normal solo gameplay that is centerpiece to Metroid.

I like her games, i like her voice, i like her body and her face... Well, i don't nedd to read above.

I'm not convinced that it was Samus' voice at the beginning of Super Metroid.  I think it was some computer or something.  She did narrate the intro, though.  The main reason I don't want to hear Samus talk is because I don't want anything distracting me from her massive boobs.  As long as she speaks only when wearing the chozo armor (whatever it's being called, these days.......), I won't mind.

^^^The guy above actually knows what an etecoon is!  I support any statement he makes!!  And for the record, even though she didn't actually speak with a voice in Metroid Fusion, Samus wasn't a silent protagonist.  Sometimes, she wouldn't shut the hell up!!

Ditto.
