PS3 isn't close to Wii so much as Wii has fallen down to PS3 level sales. PS3 is doing quite poorly too, remember that we're into August now and PS3 Slim was very widely known this time last year, and sales were very poor (93K, PS2 was nipping at it's heels). Being up 60% against last year's August sales is nothing to be happy about.

Wii is getting a slew of software in the short term, if they are big hits Wii will recover for a while. Any risk of Wii falling into third place again however will depend as ever on software, but tbh there's no reason to believe we won't have yet another drought after the holiday period this year.

So in other words... The PS3... IS now close to the Wii. Because the PS3 has raised in sales and the Wii has drastically dropped. I sense huge spin on your part... There are less than 10,000 units separating them this week. Compared to last year, when there was over 100,000 units separating them... The PS3 has rose by 54k, and the Wii has dropped by 65k.

And trying to say the PS3 is doing poorly despite being UP 54k on last year this week alone is just... Probably the stupidest thing I've read all year on this website. It's up over 1.6 Million for the year. And you're seriously trying to say it's doing poorly?

ps3 hasnt lost the momentum that the slim gave it. why should it change this holiday? and if 360 didnt get the slim it would be way far from the wii. the only disapointing sales are the wii. 360 is doing great so is ps3. 60% in a dry season is very good. you must understand that playstation had lost such a big image, and now it almost has it back. also last year how much did 360 have 100k? ps3 has 140k in august.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

For all you doom and gloom people out there  consider this for a second. What does 360 have to offer after Gears 3 launches? The answer at the moment is nothing, they will be reliant on 3rd party sales. Sony on the other hand has a huge list of 2011 titles and will likely have a price cut to fall back on should they need to. Yes the 360s and price drop hurt Sony in the hardware race but this is the first week in quite a while 360 outsold PS3 in software.

Long term outlook Sony> Microsoft

Short Term outlook Microsoft>Sony and Nintendo

I bet we get Kinect compatible ports of AOE Online and MS Flight.  Both games look great, it'd be a smart move and might entice more of the 'base' over to Kinect.  AOE especially, RTS done right on consoles is long overdue and with the HD twins finally getting true motion controls I think the time's right.

There's also at least one more big JRPG coming out of Japan, which AQi (ie: Feelplus, Artoon, Cavia) is working on.  Forza Kinect is likely too and there's no doubt MS is going to pick up Kingdom Under Fire II also, which looks amazing btw.  I expect to see Shadow Complex 2 next year too... and really, that's just the stuff we know about.

And why leave Nintendo out of the 'long term'?  Next year already looks great Wii side, with Zelda Skyward Sword, Mario Sports Mix, and probably the western releases for Xenoblade and The Last Story.

In fairness, half the Wii drop YOY is attributable to Japan, where it was still riding high of MH3 and the black Wii introduction a couple weeks earlier.  Even still, YOY Wii's up in Japan ytd though.

Maybe they think Nintendo's gonna do a sneak launch at December 30th for the Ultra Wii

Above: still the best game of the year.

In Japan, for sure imo.  About one year after 3DS sneaks into this holiday in Japan.

RE5 and MVC3 will make for nice launch efforts from Capcom. ;)

Left nintendo out of long term because they have already won

I wonder how 360 sales are going to look when Reach is released.
