Forums - Sony Discussion - New Sony laser technology 20 times better than Blu-Ray

i think PS4 will be the first playstation to have the same optical media as the previous generation... and if they come up with a proprietary optical media due to piracy issues it will be the same as BD but with some tweaks to make it more secure...

Proudest Platinums - BF: Bad Company, Killzone 2 , Battlefield 3 and GTA4

Nah this has to be BS. Remember all Sony do is copy. 20 times better than Blu ray, didn't some other company do this already. Lol hahaha this is too funny

This is nothing special btw, holographic technology has been around for years, also know as the holographic versatile disc(HVD). Early prototypes already hade a capacity of 500 gb(20 times that of a normal Blu-Ray) with a possible max capacity of 6 to 10 terabytes(6000-10000gb). Many big companys including Sony are active in the development of these discs, and plan on releasing 1tb discs  around 2019.

In the mean time although the current maximum for Blu-Ray is 50gb with 2 layers, there are already prototypes shown that support up to 10 layers, increasing Blu-Ray to 250gb witch will be more than enough for a possible PS4.

Besides gaming will probably move on to digital distribution in the future.

We wont see that technology in the Ps4.

A 2 layer Bluray can hold upto 66 gb. And there is a new 3 layer Bluray developed recently by sharp. Which the PS3 can read and it has 100gb. It will last probably longer then DVD since there is no real use for more then 100gb at the moment. 3D and 1080p will be standard for years to come and they are woking with 50-100gb.

And a Bluray can have 20 layers and upto 600gb-750gb. So if Sony is talking 20 more then probably per layer so the future standard will have eventually 20 terabyte. 1 TB is not enough to impress imo.

But the real problem is not the capacity which is enough imo for everything the next years 200gb Bluray discs will be common in the next 3-5 years and they can be read by any bluray player no need to upgrade to a new standard.

128 GB are defined as the new Bluraystandard and PS3 will be able to read them,

Sony needs to make the discs faster more bandwith more speed thats important not more capacity.

Hopefully Sony wont make the same mistakes again: I would be happy with a cheap 8X Bluray drive which can read Bluray discs upto 200gb in the PS4, would be cheap and more then enough space. No new technology some IBM Power CPU with enough cores and 4 gb DDR5 Ram 1 terabyte HD and 399-449 Price at launch, in the year 2012-2013.

I really hope Sony isn't stupid enough to use this on the next Playstation, creating another $600 system.... PS3 didn't even really need Blu-Ray.

Still, it's nice to have it now, yes?

Also, tell that to Hideo Kojima and MGS4.

Some of the best games on the original PLaystation where multi-disc, including Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo and FF7 to name a few.

Besides they could have opted for double sided DVD's, wich would have been faster to since the PS3 only uses a 2x Blu- Ray player. For comparison, 2x Blu-Ray is about equal in speed as a 8x dvd(that's right, 360's 12x dvd player can actually data faster than PS3's Blu-Ray player). And offcourse it would have saved Sony about $150 per PS3 from the start.

Multi-disc have always been a disadvantage. More production costs, more licensing costs (MS for example charges heftly for every extra disc), and of course the hassle of changing discs. And double-sided DVDs are dumbest decision you could make. You still have higher production costs, since there still two sides, and yoou scratch both surfaces when touching it. And you still need to turn the DVD. And even double sided DVDs would have been too less space for MGS4:

8.5 8.5 = 17 GB

BD DL = 50GB

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

Do you think  a 12 x blu ray drive will be cheap enough by the time sony is ready with PS4? when ever this generation is finished ofc. Currently a Internal PC 12x BD is $139 - 200  on newegg.

its been confirmed today that GT5 has a weather system, track editor and go karts! seriously i think this is going to be the best selling in the series even beating GT3 sales of 14 million plus!

Lots of PS3 games use redundant data because  the ps3 Blue ray drive is slow/most games use less space than is needed  e.g infamous disk size and infamous downloadable.

@flyingline download games are more compressed to save bandwrith

and the blu ray on the ps3 isn't more slow it have a more constant speed that xbox360 variable x12 drive.

difference go from 10mbps-30mbps at much out of hundreds.

and of course they are games line uncharted 2, killzone2, god of war 3, that do streaming from disc without installation and actually are the best graphics on consoles :)

and the reason that FF7 was on multiple disc was nintendo 64 couldn't hold it either there was no choice, but it hurted the game because u couldn't back track to some places.

its 21st century we got choice now, and its still an annoyance-

MGS4 has like 8/9 hours of cutscenes?..... No wonder it takes up al that space. And they could have used a drive with two lenses(one for each side) so you didn't have to turn the dvd(probably would have cost like $10 extra).

More importantly X360 is doing fine with just DVD(not to mention Wii). I'm not saying Blu-Ray isn't better, it just wasn't a smart move by Sony from a cost and business perspective.

It will  be cheap enough and 8x would be sufficent I think. In 3 years it will be probably around 80 Dollar if you go in a shop and buy it there, and for Sony probably around 30-40 Dollar.
