Forums - Sony - Attention - Change the thermal paste on your 60gb ps3 or it will explode

Here in Sweden we have a 5 year ..complain thing where if an electronic device stops working and it's not our fault, we can send it back and they'll fix it.

I got YLOD in feb 2009, I got my 60GB in 2007 July. They asked about my warranty and we said it's expired (it was only 1 year) and then they said theres nothing we can do. My dad then said, I want to file a complain and they instantly took it in and said you'll get a new one in 1-2 weeks. It took about 2-3 weeks and they sent a new 60GB :). Im basically set until 2012 and if it breaks then, I'll pay for a repair on my 60GB (They won't repair it anyway, they just give you new 60GBs xDD). 60 gig, BC and 4 USB ports ftw! Oh and useless memory stuff <33

*sigh* another thing to worry about for my 60 gb ps3, is there a video on how to do this?

here's some cheap, decent looking, non-conductive thermal paste on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154003&cm_re=thermal_paste-_-35-154-003-_-Product

here are the videos I used for disassembly/assembly (skip the first 10 seconds of each video)

Note: in video 3 he takes off the motherboard cage. You can do this, but it's not necessary in order to change the thermal paste. Skip that part if you want and go right to the part where he removes old paste and applies new stuff.

Note 2: Be careful with the blue HDD screw! This is very important as it is easy to strip. Make sure you use the proper size screwdriver and use adequate pressure to get it out.

My friend's PS3 YLOD about 8 months ago or so, and he had me repair it. I opened it up and did the heat gun method, and one of the steps to doing that is you have to replace the thermal paste, so for the doubters, there is some truth behind what the OP is saying. If the thermal paste does indeed dry off completely, mine should be completely gone as my PS3 runs SUPER hot in my house. It's been said that it sounds like a jet plane is about to take off. I should take the time and do this to mine, although I'm a little nervous just incase something bad happens (even tho I've done this twice already).

It only does everything.

(I can't believe I'm the first one to do that in this thread)

Awesome, thanks for the heads up.

My 60GB PS3 hasn't gotten much use lately, combined with the fear of YLOD'ing I was considering trading it in earlier. If there's a good way of avoiding its death, though, I'll definitely be hanging onto it!

I just did this for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

I took my PS3 to a repair shop for the Blu-ray drive and the guys there suggested that i replace the thermal paste as soon as i could to avoid the LYOD problem.

I did it, bought Arctic Silver, a compressed air can and some thermal paste remover, cost about £10 in total from Amazon.co.uk then spent an evening cleaning it out and replacing the paste.

I'm no computer expert, but it wasn't too hard, i followed some videos posted by some english guy on youtube which were a real help. hardest bit was remembering which screws when in which holes when putting it back together!

Seemed to work alright, but i don't think it's running much quieter, if at all.
