My friend's PS3 YLOD about 8 months ago or so, and he had me repair it. I opened it up and did the heat gun method, and one of the steps to doing that is you have to replace the thermal paste, so for the doubters, there is some truth behind what the OP is saying. If the thermal paste does indeed dry off completely, mine should be completely gone as my PS3 runs SUPER hot in my house. It's been said that it sounds like a jet plane is about to take off. I should take the time and do this to mine, although I'm a little nervous just incase something bad happens (even tho I've done this twice already).
