Forums - Sony - Will the Playstation 3 dominate the Wii?

Well, a lot of japanese developers were still making games for the NES, by the time the Genesis launched. How many big games from japanese developers were released on the Genesis before the end of 1990? Later on, when it was already clear that Sega could compete with Nintendo this time, there were some big games from japanese developers. In America the situation was different, because the Genesis had a good launch there and the system was well supported by american developers early on.

Is there any place where you can actually look up some early sales information of the 4th gen?

Sega did pretty much everything right until they started with the add ons. But the SNES could catch up because it still had the majority of big japanese games.

Even with the Japanese developers on board, those games were still a dime a dozen compared to the library Sega currently had in 91-92.

Everything you said in that first post, Sega had in spades, yet, that wasn't enough. Thus proving,"The console with the most games will see the most sales," to be untrue. Now if you meant lifetime, then I can see where you are going, as all those add-ons just ruined Sega.

I don't have a web site that shows precise numbers from that time, but I did watch a show on TV that talked about the SNES and Genesis, and it probably was '92 or '93 because this was a little before the release of the Sega CD, and Sega's market share at the time was only 51 percent compared to Nintendo's 49.

Famine the Mega Drive never sold well in Japan. It got crushed by the Super Famicom. The Mega Drive had virtually no Japanese RPG support. In fact virtually all of the Mega Drive's rpg's were from Sega's internal studios. The PC-Engine (Turbo Graphix 16) out sold the Mega Drive in Japan. During the 16-bit era Japan was still the most important gaming market. Sega had no presence there. In fact the only Sega system that ever performed well in Japan was the Saturn.

"As long as they have stuff like Wii Fit, ninty will be just fine "

As will the PS3. I do not think they will outsell Nintendo in Japan but in the rest of the world I think they have a good chance later in the console cycle.

With all due respect, those RPGs weren't available from the getgo on the SNES. The SNES launched with two games and that was enough to stir a whirlwind there, and still by '92, the Genesis still had a bigger game catalogue than the SNES.

I don't think Japan was still the most important gaming market because even with the Mega Drive not selling in Japan, it had great success in North America, and it had much better success in Europe than Nintendo for sure.

And how dare you not mention the Dreamcast, didn't they just stop making games for it only a few months ago?

Are you retarded? How does "price drops, or newly released, highly anticipated games" boosting sales fit in the weird and unexpected category? PSP beat the DS because of FFVII:CC AND the new slim line. PS3 beat the Wii because of a few games AND a new cheaper whiter SKU. My 9 year old cousin could tell you that.

First of all, you need to show some respect to others, especially if they have been in this website, far longer than you. Second of all, you did not understand what I meant. Price drops, and newly released games will boost the sales of consoles, which explains the odd, unexpected, but temporary jumps, in graphs, and charts. Okay? So before calling others "retarded," perhaps you should think twice, and maybe even review your own, mental status, before others. The PSP did not beat the DS. I don't know what you're talking about there. If you meant that it outsold it temporarily, than perhaps you should have added to that sentence, which gives more reason for you not to criticise the posts of others, especially if you have errors in your own. Your 9 year old cousin could not have told me that.

This isn't an hierarchal society for christ's sake; it's a message board on some website of negligle importance outside its inner circle of users. You don't gain special rights just beacuse you have more posts than somebody. I'm not sure if the fact that you actually believe that, or the fact that the alleged respect actually matters to you is more pitiful.

You deliberately avoid, the parts of my posts, that you may like, to only reply to the parts, that you don't like, and do not write that there is nothing of my posts that you don't like, because you'd only be fooling yourself. Seriously, your entire reply was towards a few words out of my post, "especially if they have been in this website, far longer than you." Does that make sense to you? Fine, it doesn't matter if I have been in this website, for a long time. Okay? Happy? Does it matter? No! One should not not reply with such, idiotic insults! As for you, you should not support this kind of bull shit.

how come you decided to revive this topic after a month......?

I don't think a lot of people understand why momentium is so important ...

  • People tend to buy the system that their friends have and/or they have had personal experience with.
  • The media focuses on the most popular system and people have a (generally) favourable impression about anything that is presented by the mainstream media
  • Third party publishers focus on the most popular system, and consumers are attracted to the system with the best third party support.
  • Retailers devote far more space to popular systems, and the larger quantity of games and accessories gives potential consumers the impression of a "better" library

Eventuaslly yes but more to do so with wii crappin out then anything else.

3rd party wont support the wii with their games selling a hell of alot less then 1st party, nearly 15 times less (compare the top sellers).

Wii does not have a good library, wiis 3rd party failure will equal retailers focusing on PS3/360 alot more.

As far as momentum, um with what will Nintendo keep it up with ?

People will buy the system with the most diverse/most well known franchises as they always have.

No. Never. If current trends persist, it is the PS3 that will lose its overwhelming third party support. The Wii's momentum will be too compelling - third party support will inevitably improve. The reason why Wii lacks third party support right now is obvious - it's because the industry expected PS3 to be the dominant console. This scenario can't be turned around overnight, but have patience - it will happen. Just look at the data - is there any indication whatsoever to suggest that PS3 will overtake Wii? No? I didn't think so.
