Forums - Gaming - Has Final Fantasy VII not aged well?

It has not played well at all.

We love to say graphics don't matter, but that doesn't mean we like things to look bad. Final Fantasy VII just plain looks terrible. It didn't look good when it came out and it looks horrible on the eyes now. Compare it to something like Final Fantasy VI with beautifully painted backgrounds and hand drawn sprites and it just looks even worse.

I get the technology was new then, but just because you have it doesn't mean you should rush out and use it. FFVII was really just an awful looking game.

As for the gameplay, it's traditional JRPG people have played time and time again with a story that isn't even that good and characters that are just boring.

Really, the only people that tout it as the greatest game of all time are just the ones that are saying it for the nostalgic factor or the ones that think they're supposed to say that because it's cool to have a crush on Cloud or Sephiroth.

Yeah sure it didn't twesterm {rolls eyes}

I can hardly think of a PS1 game that aged well. I'd rather play SNES games.

Visually speaking of course.

R-Types has, as have some of the other arcade to home games.  I wonder at what level polygon based graphics would be said to age well.

I am seeing there is a demand for a remake of Final Fantasy VII, and I am curious why.  Isn't the original Final Fantasy VII available as a download?  I am curious, if it is, why a remake?  Has the original Final Fantasy VII not aged well, and it needs a graphic boost?  If the gaming world of Final Fantasy VII is that good, why not do a sequel based on it, instead of a remake?

I don't get why a remake of Final Fantasy VII is demanded, unless maybe the original hasn't aged well.

Because the graphics have not aged well, and indeed, a lot of people think it's the best game ever made. It is surely the pinnacle of the JRPG genre imo and pretty much almost everyone would like to, in theory, play back through it every once in a while.

Problem is, the game is fugly.

Also, some people would like a certain side quest added, which would change the games story fundamentally, and I came when I heard about it.

...lol.

That said, the rest of the game is stricly awesome, and it has some of the best pacing and accessable yet deep gameplay available in a jrpg. I give it a 9.6/10 and it's one of my favorite games. I love the iconic characters and astounding backdrops. The gameplay itself is also deep and rewarding. Great, great game.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

...oh yeah, and I forgot, the BEST thing about VII is the music. It has the BEST music in any game, period, imo.

People are shocked at twesterms "attack"? He does it all the time, most FFVI fanboys do it to FFVII. You get used to it.

OT:
No. Not at all. The graphics just look horrible nowadays on a big screen TV. Everything else in the game is pretty much spot-on.

It needs a big graphical update. FFXIII level graphics or something. Voiceovers. Updated soundtrack.

Don't change too much though. There is a reason it is the best selling Final Fantasy. And the most popular.

the music in FF VII is wack, well that's my opinion.. I believe the music in Kingdom Hearts tops any game.. and FF XIII has way better music than FF VII
