it has an 83 on meta, which is pretty similar to the last Mario Kart game so I doubt there is a huge difference in quality between the two.

I would say something about Mario Kart's metacritic rating, but this isn't the point of the thread.
On-topic: In retrospect, those ads were extremely childish, or downright offensive (Fat guy from My Name Is Earl, really?). The ads pandered to this rebellious teenage demographic.
The main difference between the glorious then and the enjoyable now, is that....those ads were "teen-suggestive", but the games featured in them weren't exactly the same thing. Some games were meant for everyone and weren't too violent.
Nowadays, the ads are built like movies, but entire games are built around the "teen-suggestive" demographic.
