Wow. I like downloading (in fact, the few UMD games I own, I wish I'd have downloaded --for the convenience) but Sony is committing suicide if they're going that route. It's too soon. And how long does it take to download a PSP game without a PC or a PS3? I've never been brave enough to try!!

not long at all. maybe 5 minutes with decent wireless. If PSP2 uses wireless-N it would be amazingly fast.

I'm not talking about PSP Minis or small games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, or even comic books.  You mean a full fledged PSP game that is in the range of 1GB or more can down load in 5 minutes?  Even my PC and my hard wired PS3/360 can't download data that fast!!  If this wireless-N (that I admit I've never heard of) can download data that fast then I'm gonna give Sony the benefit of the doubt.  The market is crowding fast and there are still those intimidated by digital media, but I'll be onboard.  Is the mass market ready, though?

Yes the market has been ready for about 3 years now. And max speed Wireless-N is capable of is 150mbps over a distance of about 200 meters.

And when i state that the standard has been around for 3 years. Before N, there was N-Draft, which was a pre-release of the signal. It was out 3 years before N was standardized.

Without having the physical retail market this could be disastrous.

The lack of a retail market shouldn't matter, b/c you would probably be able to just download a game which would be added onto your next month's cellphone bill, uh that is if the PSP2 is indeed a phone as well which I'm guessing that it will be.

Oh, wow. I can't believe they are considering going this route.

Color me impressed.

I was looking forward to the PSP2...not any more. Sony love to screw up.

PSP2 will be a download-only device similar to PSP go, if comments by Sony Computer Entertainment Australia are anything to go by.

“PSP go… was the first device of its kind, where you didn’t have packaged goods or pre-recorded media, and I think PSP go will blaze the trail for future iterations of the handheld,” he said.

These are the three things which pretty much destroy any credibility in this article.

The main problems with download only that people seem to be voicing here is that you can't resell games. Another problem would be the fact that you HD would fill up if you had loads of games.
I can see Sony renting games to people to solve this - ie. $5 for a week/fortnight. This would be a cheaper alternative although not one that I would be mad keen on.
I also think it needs a music player and phone, then i might consider it.

This is not an exit.

The reason why the PSPgo's games cost $40 is b/c so few people were expected to buy them and Sony has to pay the developers enough and also make a profit through the games, so expect a high price.

But, if Sony adds the game playing to a phone it will add relatively little to the base price of the phone. So you'll get a decent phone, with a game controller and the ability to download good games for free ( though the games themselves will cost) Add in Sony's 1st party development and you've got a great platform for Sony to make money from. This is going to be great and I can't wait for it to be out.

To make this work for retailers, I'd bet it will be heavily marked up. Also, it will require a good solution to storage via either large SSD or flash memory or take SD cards, not the stupid Sony memory stick, but the universal SD card.

Eitherway, I think by focusing on both pure gaming as well as smart phone will be disastrous for them as neither product will get supported fully and will allow Nintendo to walk away with it again.

People buy iPhones, Droids, and Blackberries because the cellular company pays for 80% of the cost of the phone due to contracts. Having a PSP that is fully featured like a smart phone w/ 3G/4G will only increase its price beyond mass market.

Nintendo won't do that. The 3DS will be sub $200 and will sell like hotcakes. Sony should focus on costs management and build a solid game experience.

good , now a touchscreen. even my watch has a touchscreen now.
