Forums - Gaming - What kind of phenomenon is Heavy Rain?

its something no other developer has ever done and no other publisher would have supported? but it still all depends on your opinion of what a phenomenon is? we will never know. remember sony nor the developers expected this type of succee. thats why some people still say LBP was a failure becasue they expected more sells wise and a big boost in hardware, but LBP was a succee. and it probably did boost hardware sells but not like people thought it would.

well it's a new genre, a new way of telling the story, all the characters can die and the story still goes on, the gamplay makes you feel like you are in the game experiencing what the characters are facing.

thumbs up to sony they helped bring to life two new genras this gen.

Indigo Prophecy says hello.

It may not be a phenomenon but its definetely one of the biggest Sleeper Hits of the generation & the rise of possibly a new genre.

Really if we go by direct definitions there has only been 1 phenomenon this generation, Wii Sports.

This thread was about as necessary as this reply...

Perhaps I'll go calling other games phenomenon's in threads about those games and see if we can get some more threads created as to whether or not they are.

In the other thread, where the user posted the GTA-Heavy Rain video, that person called Heavy Rain a phenomenon.  I tried to discuss that in there, and CGI said that I was derailing the thread.  So, what else to do, but discuss that comment in another thread?  And that is what I did.

No. I quoted you strictly based on your unnecessary comments, it had nothing to do with you disagreeing with those words and you know it.

You went in there and talked about "fanboys", or how "the game wouldn't be praised if it were multiplat", etc.... All things that had nothing to do with anything.

I didn't go into the other thread, as it said "spoiler", but this just seems like a thread made to talk negatively about the game.  Perhaps I'm missinterpreting it.  But if the next thread that comes up is "Is Heavy Rain the best entertainment ever created" with the OP saying no, then I'm thinking that would be trolling, right?

Heavy Rain is not a new genre. it is basically a modern version of the classic point & click adventure games.

Ok but its sold so well it could make this genre very popular. In that respect it could be seen as a phenomenon.

FF7 was basically a modern version of FF4, 5, 6. But it was still a phenomenon as it made that genre popular.

I'm not saying Heavy Rain has the impact that FF7 had, it didn't, but it has been the genre's breakout hit this generation & its sold enough to make other devs think hey this type of game HAS a chance of selling.

In the thread on Heavy Rain in Liberty City, the original posted posted this line about Heavy Rain: "Be it positive or negative reactions like the infamous "press X to Jason" bit, i think just the fact that someone thought it was worthwhile to make something like this tells a lot about the phenomenon Heavy Rain has become.".

Well, exactly what kind of phenomenon has Heavy Rain become?  All I saw is one fan-made video, here and mocking of "Press X to Jason".  Outside of that, I saw a few other spoofs.  I don't see anything that would put the game in a "phenomenon" level.  I just see stuff in keeping with a title that may be considered a sleeper hit, and related material around that.

But, is Heavy Rain really a phenomenon?

Yes, i said that. and that is my opinion. and i explained it in more detail in the other thread before i saw this one.

Now please answer me this:

You were bothered about the use of the word "phenomenon" in regard to Heavy Rain to such an extent that you thought you need to go and make a thread about it?

Now where is the difference in that to make a "Press X to Jason" flash game or a Video Homage? Maybe the effort was less, but you can not deny that Heavy Rain, if you played it or not had some kind of Impact on you that made you do that.

Again, i welcome you to taking part in the (in my opinion) phenomenon.

Edit: i might add English is not my native language, and the German word "Phänomen", which i tried to express in English is mainly regarded as "rare occurrence"

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Do you know what Sleeper hit means? It means something going big out of nowhere, if anything L4D is a sleeper hit, wasn't on hardly anyone's radar and sold v well. Even that's stretching the term though.
