Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Nintendo Mature titles hurt them?

We kinda started this in the Godfather thread but, will the fact that these games feel so realistic cause the media to twist it into some like the GTA hot-coffee thing? In the Godfather thread some talk about how real it felt to be choking some one because you hold a back button on each controller, they have Manhunt (I don't know the play style), Scarface(which will probably play simlar to the Godfather), and No More Heroes (you can find a trailer on IGN where he is cutting people in half and blood is flying everywhere). With all these games being played by acutal motions will this be a issue with the public. Now, if this was on the 360 or the PS3 it's a given that it would be a problem but because this is a system that's known for it's kiddie image and Mario, will it simply be overlooked. Can Nintendo balance this out, or will the Wii be the cause of some kid beating another kid in the head with a bat because it felt so natural on his game. In this case can great controls and natural feel be a gift or a curse? And how do you think this will affect different regions of the world?

Also, I wish they would come out with a Star Wars game how cool would it be cutting people in half with your lightsaber!

Here in Europe and especially in germany (not so much in switzerland) this killer-games thing has been a big issue during the last years, and this could increase with the wii. as far as i know, red steel can't be sold to people younger than 18 in germany and i think most of the wii-fps will experience the same.

If this gets a subject in the media, this could become a problem for nintendo, because casuals don't distinguish between the various consoles, which means that they call the wii "the new playstation" and they don't know about nintendos kiddie-image aswell.

but if this is only discussed by gamers, it could even help nintendo, because a big issue for nintendo here during the last two generations was their kiddie-image, which made it uncool to own nintendo-systems.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

I agree with you nintendo fanboy in germany the discussion about these games is large. In Germany EA did not realese The Godfather. I think Manhunt will follow.

I don't know, there has been so much talk over the years about violent video games, and everyone seems to rope in every company with violence. Parents who buy their kids games that care, and I emphasize the word care, as I know parents who I work with buying their 10 yr. old kids GTA, and finding out later he plays with his son and laughs all the content off, it seems like those who care are few. But anyway those who care still know Nintendo is the only gaming option for kids. Parents are starting to figure out, that games are for adults too, so both games are going to be their for any given system. And I believe Stof said it in the godfather subject, what are people going to do? Start buying the other systems for their kids with even more adult titles? No. They have DVD players there are kid movies, and adult movies, they use discresion there, now it's time to use discretion with games as well.

GTA did get some news lately, with the trailer coming out and revealing NY, of course mayor bloomberg had something to say about a game that would virtually allow you to kill NY cops, but everyone knows what GTA is about, so the story is dead the next day. Plus alot more parents are playing games now, and either they want the adult content themselves or they at least understand the market enough to not complain about it. Although I'm wondering when Manhunt comes out if they'll show some groesume footage and show people acting out the moves with the wiimote, I can imigane that video looking bad, and hence a good reason for the news to show it, as they like anything that looks controversial. Some will I'm sure complain. But again with Nintendo's console having the least amount of adult content, I can't imagine it lasting long. Plus what are they afraid of? Lawsuits? They pretty much get sued with the rest of the game industry every time something bad happens, like in the columbine lawsuit I know they we're named. So it's not like they're protecting themselves from that.

EDIT: btw I'm only talking about the US being that I have no idea how Europe will react to this stuff. But if Germany didn't release games like Godfather, what about other shooters? That's half the 360 lineup, do they not get GTA, Saint's Row, Scarface, Crackdown, and others?

Actually the USK (the organisation here at germany, that decides at which age you can buy a game) had a press-statement, that red steel had only a 18+-rating because of the controller. With a classical-controller it would allowed for a younger audience. But with a wiimote you swing your sword more directly. source (in german): http://www.gamezone.de/news_detail.asp?nid=51014&sys=

GTA is available here in germany (age 16+). The game I know has problems here is 'Gears of wars', it's on the index of the BPjM (Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien). That means it is not allowed to advertise the game, that includes openly showing it in a shop. So most shops dont sell indexed games. Some magazines even tell the name, if they publish for instance NPD-numbers of games. If you look at: http://www.gfdata.de/archiv03-2007-gamefront/2874.html This are the NPD-number for february, under software is left out the name of the game placed 6th.

That really looks stupid, I would only get curious what game was sixth there and with that it would only get extra attention instead of less.

Swinging the sword in Red Steel is like pg, I'm calling it "No More Heroes will not be released there". Or it will be a indexed game like Gears of War. It looks so violent from the trailer on IGN and the devolpment team was told to make the game as violent as possible, they said "Make the game more violent then Manhunt" (I don't know how violent Manhunt is) so that is going to be a problem.

Ya...No More Heroes is gonna get some attention for its violence I bet.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

i think mature titles are good for nintendo's image,  because

violent games are games people talk about. many sony fanboys

try to say nintendo is for children but with such titles you can show them truth

when you can't buy this title (like godfather in germany/austria) than order it online ...

i did the same
