lol, how was FF X's battle system deep? :P I liked the Sphere Grid but when it came to the actual battling it wasn't much different from other turn based games.

I'd prefer if more devs went for more innovative turn based battle systems like Baten Kaitos Origins or Paper Mario as I said before.

@andre

Agree. TTYD combat is fun.

I stressed about how it was the best of the FF games, not other turn-based RPGs! It was vastly superior to the ATB system, why on earth do I have to rush through my options in a JRPG? I do that in a FPS or Monster Hunter game!

Also, it was extremely deep. Search youtube for videos of finishing off Jecht and ending the game at ''level'' 1! You could plan ahead for many turns. That's depth to me.

As for Paper Mario and such, I loved its battle system (M&L even more), though they really lack in depth. They are JRPGs at core, while retaining all the playfulness, simplicity and enjoyment of a typical Mario game. As far as epic battle systems though, I'd put FFX, FFVIII, FFIX, FF Tactics and many other game over them, though.

I actually like them if they're a mix of turn-based and action. Like in Dragon Age Origins where you play in real-time but you can pause the action, give commands and strategically place people in the best positions. Or in FFXIII which was good fast-paced fun.

I think it's because they are making turn based RPGs too complicated. The very benefit of having it turn based is the simplicity. They shouldn't take that away.

I LOVE ICELAND!

This. When I play JRPG's I want to relax. With turn-based system I can lie on sofa and think about what I do carefully. I might even go to kitchen and take some soda and then continue. I really don't know why everything needs to have action all the time nowadays. If I want to play action games I play FPS or some hack'n slash.

Actually, I agree to a certain extent.

I love turnbased, or I did, turnbased RPGs were the bees knees, but after playing the "new generation" of RPGs, which have gone for an action RPG feel, or faster paced battles, I now prefer it, I mean, FFXIII is still turn based in a sense, it's ATB, however, the way it works is really great, it's fluid, it's fast, and it fits the game, I'd like to see more like this. I'm also starting to shy away from random encounters, I used to love them because I like grinding, but I don't know, I guess I'm just getting used to the new style, lol.

Although I'll always welcome games that use the traditional turnbased and random battles...

My preference: Fast-paced Hack n Slash/Beat-em-up RPGs (think Diablo, Torchlight, Castle Crashers, etc. for the western variety. Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia and Muramasa for Japanese variety) > Turn-based RPGs >>>>>>>> Slower-paced Real-time RPGs (Tales, Star Ocean, Eternal Sonata though that's quasi-real time)

So I put somewhere in the middle. Like KillerMan, I find turn-based jrpgs ideal (same with visual novels/point-and-click adventures) when I want to play something relaxing. Whether it be in front of the TV on my sofa, at my desk or during a boring class lecture on my laptop (via emulation), lying in bed with my DS Lite or needing some sort of distraction on the go (I don't take my DS with me often when I'm out though).

If I want action, I would rather sink my teeth into a hack n slash (like KillerMan mentioned). For me, games like Tales, Star Ocean, etc. don't fulfill my need for action (they are so slow-paced for me. My interest level going through battles in Tales and Star Ocean is loads lower than say going through hordes of baddies in Diablo, Torchlight, No More Heroes, etc.) Tales and Star Ocean just don't satisfy my needs for action. And it's much more tediious and annoying having to go through these slow-paced battles in real-time (and let's face it, you can't run away from all of them. You have to fight in order to be adequately levelled) than turn-based, where you don't have to expend as much effort.

I understand that some people absolutely love Tales and Star Ocean and I respect that. It's not for me though. Hack n Slash fulfills my action needs more and turn-based jrpgs seem less tedious to me. This is also the reason why I didn't like Mass Effect (a western RPG). It's too slow for my tastes. I was hoping for a more run-n-gun rpg rather than Gears of War RPG. Maybe I'll give Borderlands a try.

FFXIII worked extremely well in terms of giving an action feel & fast paced feel but being challenging at the same time.

It worked fantastically combined with the amazing animations in battle.

I want to see Turn Based RPG Systems become like that, maybe they can slow it down slightly & add the ability to switch characters.

Apart from this I love SO4's battle system too. Seriously apart from DS I dunno if I can enjoy Turn based (Traditional style) anymore.
