My preference: Fast-paced Hack n Slash/Beat-em-up RPGs (think Diablo, Torchlight, Castle Crashers, etc. for the western variety. Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia and Muramasa for Japanese variety) > Turn-based RPGs >>>>>>>> Slower-paced Real-time RPGs (Tales, Star Ocean, Eternal Sonata though that's quasi-real time)

So I put somewhere in the middle. Like KillerMan, I find turn-based jrpgs ideal (same with visual novels/point-and-click adventures) when I want to play something relaxing. Whether it be in front of the TV on my sofa, at my desk or during a boring class lecture on my laptop (via emulation), lying in bed with my DS Lite or needing some sort of distraction on the go (I don't take my DS with me often when I'm out though).

If I want action, I would rather sink my teeth into a hack n slash (like KillerMan mentioned). For me, games like Tales, Star Ocean, etc. don't fulfill my need for action (they are so slow-paced for me. My interest level going through battles in Tales and Star Ocean is loads lower than say going through hordes of baddies in Diablo, Torchlight, No More Heroes, etc.) Tales and Star Ocean just don't satisfy my needs for action. And it's much more tediious and annoying having to go through these slow-paced battles in real-time (and let's face it, you can't run away from all of them. You have to fight in order to be adequately levelled) than turn-based, where you don't have to expend as much effort.

I understand that some people absolutely love Tales and Star Ocean and I respect that. It's not for me though. Hack n Slash fulfills my action needs more and turn-based jrpgs seem less tedious to me. This is also the reason why I didn't like Mass Effect (a western RPG). It's too slow for my tastes. I was hoping for a more run-n-gun rpg rather than Gears of War RPG. Maybe I'll give Borderlands a try.
