Forums - Nintendo - Does anyone else think the Metroid series deserves better sales?

Maybe the Retro style will help this game to sell better 3D environments with 2D controls scheme

make it multiplatform. that'l do it.

well Nintendo have been trying to make metroid Huge.. i think Metroid Other M might have a chance because it looks like it might have a big appeal

Metroid Prime didn't sell well because it alienated a large portion of the fans who hate the idea of a first person shooter Metroid title. The bulk of first person shooter fans have an illogical hatred for Nintendo that is similar to KKK hate.

The whole "First Person Adventure" title is a load of BS from its fans to try and distinguish it from other FPS titles; but it has the same basic structure of Turok and other FPS titles. It's like when certain gamers say "I'm not a nerd, I'm ****ing hardcore!!!!!!".

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Totally agree... Metroid is by far the best IP Nintendo has IMO It should do more, but at least the sales are good enough to keep the series alive

As someone who never played a Metroid game until I recently bought Metroid Prime Trilogy, I must say the series is absolutely amazing! I'm hooked, and I plan to catch up on the classics on the VC one day. Everything about the atmosphere of the game pulls me in. It deserves way better sales, but let's not forget that 2 million is nothing to frown at. Just because Mario can sell 20 million copies, people tend to think all good games should. Well they should, but they wont. I think the classic feel of Other M plus the emotional back story into Samus' life will give it a nice boost. I think it will pass 3 million. Between 4 and 5 I would guess.

Really? Because the first one I played was Meroid Prime 3 (not having had a gamecube) and I went in expecting an FPS and after the first hour I was thinking "This is a first-person sci-fi Zelda!". The FPA title is far more accurate than just bog-standard FPS. The shooting aspect of the gameplay is FPS-like, but the puzzle elements and level setup remind me far more of adventure games than any other genre. The shooting aspect is secondary to the adventuring elements. It is different from other FPS games, and I've played a lot of FPS' (all the way back to Wolfenstein 3D and Doom to Half-Life and Deus Ex to Crysis and CoD).

OT: A few reasons:

- They decided to renew the series on their worst selling console. Not enough potential customers to get into it except the old Nintendo faithful, and many of whom who started with the N64 would have no clue about the franchise.

- Lack of advertising plays a big role. I think there was a general lack of belief from Nintendo that it could sell well. If they'd advertised the game more I think it could have done very well and perhaps shown 3rd-party publishers early on that core titles can sell on the Wii. I only knew about it and bought it because my mate's a huge Ninty and Metroid fan.

- Samus isn't that well known in the general public as Mario, Master Chief etc.

- Possibly the FP perspective and the more mature style artwork hinders sales from parents looking for games for there kids. Mario and Zelda are cartoony in look so parents looking in a shop can see and immediately assume it'll be playable for there kids.

I wouldn't lump Deus Ex in with half-life, Doom, Crysis or Cod.

Metriod isn't as shooter focussed as most FPS games and is a hybrid, just like Deus Ex is a hybrid. Though I never got the adventure part, I think Grim Fandango when I think Adventure game not Zelda personally.

Ahem... as my fave game of all time, I place Deus Ex in every list I possibly can . You're right, they're both hybrids, which is why they're both so good!

As for the adventure game thing, I personally just see Zelda and Gram Fandango as different sides of the same dice/coin.
