While the announcement might hinder the sales of the XL a bit, I don't think it'll have as big an impact as you're making it out to be. The people who want a DS will still get one rather than waiting a year for what will probably be a higher priced handheld. Plus I think the target audience for the XL is a bit different from that of the 3DS.

I think Nintendo is doing it for a reason. It just stole the thunder of the PS Move and Natal. Looking at the topics of today yesterday on just this forum what do yousee? A ton of threads about 3DS. A system we know little about, but the hype has started for some of us already. Also, we hear talk of PS3 updates making it 3d ready. Well thats cool but what about the correct TV and the need for glasses for that version??? While indeed some will be able to enjoy PS3's version of 3D Nintendos handheld will be a hell of a lot cheaper and maybe(?) give the same type of result. Again stealing thunder. In the end I view it as about stealing thunder.  Am I rightor wrong?  Would Nintendo know better than me? Yup! did I just insult myself in anyway? Nope

Yes nintendo most likey did this to steal thunder but I think there hurt XL sales because of it and maybe there was a way to steal thunder and not hurt yourself too.

i for one didnt think XL sales would be that good anyway...i know I didnt want one cuz i dont need one.

Perhaps it will dent the XL sales some, but in the long run it will help the 3DS with all the talk of 3D from Sony and the movies. I dont think there really was a better way of doing it other than this. If they had waited to mention it is 3D till E3 they would not be able to have stolen the thunder away for a couple more months. Leaveing it open for Sony Move and talk of the 3D update. The way I see it they are going to get free advertisment from all the articles on 3d too in newspapers forums etc. I also am one who does not think this is the only surprise in store for it.

Well, in my opinion, it looks like a way to announce something very new and incredible that makes Paystation Move and even Natal look like old suddendly, as 3D is the Big thing now for the mainstream audience.
