While the announcement might hinder the sales of the XL a bit, I don't think it'll have as big an impact as you're making it out to be. The people who want a DS will still get one rather than waiting a year for what will probably be a higher priced handheld. Plus I think the target audience for the XL is a bit different from that of the 3DS.
