Forums - Gaming - Final Fantasy XIII better than Final Fantasy XII?

Really? past FFX? wow that i hope for as i played about 300 hours on FFX and counting! so if FFXIII ends up being my next FFX i will be oh so happy :D yeah i agree its better than all the PS FFs, and yeah the music is better than FFXII even though it wasnt done by Nobuo Uematsu which intrigues me, have they got a composer better than Uematsu?... has hell frozen over?

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Without a doubt I am enjoying it much more than FF12.

While I did enjoy 12, it was way to hands-off for my taste. Im not sure I would call FF13 an "action" rpg by any means, its more of a hybrid turn-based/strategy rpg (just has some of that good old turn-based feeling to me).

While it is not my favorite of the series, it is an excellent game that I am enjoying as much as any of the other FF main series games (while playing it of course). I will have an idea of where the game falls compared to all the others after I have finished it.

I agree. You basically just chose the paradigms, and then just auto-battle. From a control perspective it is certainly not an action game, but it is very nice to watch

I really don't get why it has got bad reviews, it is good enough for me to have spent 10 hours today playing it

Masashi Hamauzu is the person who helped Uematsu make the FF10 soundtrack

some of the tracks he made for FFX are amazing

But with FFXIII he shows amazing talent, I wouldn't say the soundtrack in FF13 is better than the PS1 FF soundtrack though, probably better than FF8 though.

I think FFXIII should at the least tie with FFX

The things FF13 has over FF10 are battle system, characters & story.

But on the other hand FF10 has towns (I must admit I miss them a bit), better music & better villains

but hey I'm still only on chapter 10, I say only as some people claim Chapter 11 is the "half way" point.

Exactly.  Instead of having your allies doing the same things every battle (aka FF12 and Gambits) you have to switch up what everyone does for every different situation.  Ive really enjoyed getting my butt kicked by regular mobs because I made a wrong choice (switched to Medic to late to keep people alive, picked the wrong Paradigm, used the wrong buff, etc).

I actually enjoyed the strategy in setting up your gambits properly, but once I had it set it NEVER changed for the entire game.

Seven hours into the game, there are three things I don't like so far.

First, those teen characters are mostly annoying. Lighting has no self-confidence and loses her nerves, otherwise good, Snow is a bit worse than I though, and the rest are pretty much what I though. Sazh was a pleasant surprise though, he's much more mature than any other character yet. Hope was also a bit better. All in all, nothing new here, just those Japanese teen heroes.

Second, the game IS linear. Got a bit better after a couple of hours though, even though it's still linear. And third, too many cutscenes, in the beginning at least. That got a bit better recently as well.

Other than that, definitely seems better. Battle system feels slightly worse but sure it'll get better as battles get more challenging and my characters develop. But story and overall atmosphere are good so far, and I like the music. And the whole system, even with its minor flaws.

how would you compare the battle system to XII out of curiosity?

Nothing similar. Very action oriented.

That sums it up best.

If I get this game and hate the battle system, I'll buy a copy of Dot Heroes and make a video of me breaking it in half while you watch in agony!!

My big thing with RPGs is I like to have control over my actions, which is why I like the trun-base system and why I consider XII an abomination to the FF series.

I got admit, I'm considering giving FF another chance after readind some people's comments.

I hated it & was stubborn n wanted to play it like old FF's

so I decided to chose the action each character did

this basically made some boss battles close to impossible for me to beat!

I never enjoyed FF XII as much as the previous games in the series but XIII does take a bit too many elements from XII than the others for it to have the same wow factor that X had when it was released! I mean, for example, only being able to control one character when in battle is just restrictive and irritating when that character dies as the others are useless since cannot revive you and its game over which is just awful fight mechanics!

I do wonder why SE changed the turn-based fight sequence in the first place... the whole 'if its not broken then why fix it' parody comes to mind...

Oh well, bring on XV and make sure it's more like VIII, IX and X!!!

I bet it did.  That just sounds like WAY to much work to me and something you should probably only do on the PC!  Micromanaging has never been much of a console strong suite.

Yes, FFXIII is MUCH better then FFXII IMO. I LOVE FFXIII's characters. They are so awesome. Lightning & Snow FTW :)
