Woah, that is a pretty high score for Edge. The reviewer must think it is a great game.

Fine. We'll talk exclusively about gameplay. God of War's gameplay is undoubtedly genre-defining. Games like Dantes Inferno, Bayonetta and (arguably (some people may disagree)) Devil may Cry are automatically compared to it. So I'm not buying into the idea that it's gameplay isn't absolutely astounding and I definitely don't believe that the most popular games "look like ass" unless wer'e basically talking about the Wii.

No, the reason they are compared to GOW is because of the whole package GOW delivers.....any person who has played all NG , DMC and Bayonetta will tell you that GOW has by far the weakest combat system of the 3.

Im not ripping the game , but GOW's gameplay is far from genre defining.....GOW is genre defining in the sense of story , character , production value but gameplay....dont make me laugh.

Hmph. Whatever you say.....

I survived the Apocalyps3

I agree 100%, no one is saying a 8/10 is a bad game, but come on Bayonetta a 10/10 and GOW 3 an 8/10, Give me a break, Edge is so lop sided, GOW 3 is a 10/10 game. Out of GOW3 and Bayonetta , Edge is saying Bayonetta is the better game, NO fxxking way.

If you are the kind of person who gets their panties in a bunch over an 8 from Edge, you are not part of Edge's target demographic.

I'll give some input. Let's analyze the Bayo v. GOW III situation.

For a game to receive a perfect ten, it needs to be...well, perfect. Great gameplay, great story (if it has one), great atmosphere, great graphics and sound, everything. Seeing as Bayonetta had an absolutely terrible and frankly annoying story/acting, this should set it back. It also had fretfully long load times (I've seen complaints for both versions).

Then we have God of War 3, a game with unparalleled graphical fidelity, tremendous sound, epic storytelling (however basic), intense atmosphere, over-the-top-action and gameplay that has set standards for its genre.

This is the real reason people are pissed over the scoring. If they graded both games at the same level, people wouldn't complain quite as much, but giving Bayonetta (a game which is inferior based solely on what we have seen so far) a higher score is a foolish decision.
  • Story - just because you don't get what they're going for doesn't mean it's terrible.  That's like reading Harry Potter and saying WTF!?  This mystery novel sucks!
  • Acting - Again, if you don't understand it you can't fault it.
  • Load Times - I can't talk about the PS3 version since I didn't play it, but the 360 load times were never a problem.  Can you show me your source please?  They actually had a pretty genius way of handling load times and I hope games take notes on what they did.

Also, way to leave out some of the games strong points:

  • Witch time - genius and exceptionally executed.  In a game that's about killing things it made you think about defense in a great way that isn't jarring
  • Combat - I hate these sort of games but I loved Bayonetta, that should be a testement right there.
  • Combo System
  • Weapons
  • Scale
  • Sound

Bayonetta really had it all and just blew everything that was already out out of the water.

-rinse, wash and repeat...genius. It's all you do to beat the game, against (almost) everything.

Combat - I hate these sort of games but I loved Bayonetta, that should be a testement right there.

Combo System

I will give you that one, it's fun.

Weapons

The ones you buy, specially the sword. Yeah, quite fun too.

Scale

Nah. Gow is bigger than this. Even GoW2, let's not get into 3.

Sound

Annoying music, no thanks. DMC already had plenty of crazy-anime music anyway. Nothing special here, just annoyance.

What else is there for Bayonetta? it's only fight and fight, no platforming, no puzzles, little interaction with statues and stuff to open the next room, and it's always about witch time.

God of War 3 isn't out yet so it's pointless to talk about that and I haven't played God of War 2, but nonetheless, Bayonetta has an impressive scale.

You kill one enemy by throwing a church at them and later fight something as big as the solar system not to mention speed through it.  I don't know about God of War but the scale in Bayonetta is just insane no matter what it's compared to.

I so agree, they aren't biased.... they hate them all!!

wsr, nsmbwii, gow3, FF13.... even I can't think of an xbox example...

fanboys on all sides are complaining way too much about reviews lately. Just suck it up and enjoy your game.

Long Live SHIO!

@twestern

well, you may be right. But really, Bayonetta is a fun game, it's just I'm not into games that are only about hack n' slash with little else thrown into the mix (and I don't like the story, which is considered weak and nonsense far and wide, or character design)

God of War makes me feel many times the way I used to feel when I was playing TOMB RAIDER. Discovering amazing places forgotten and forbidden. The combat itself may not be deep, I'll give you that, it's never been one of its stronger points, BUT it works, it's fun and it never gets tiresome 'cause there's plenty of variety , specially enemy diversity (which Bayonetta lacks by a lot).
