RolStoppable said: Carl, what exactly is that "casual market"? And why does this "casual market" buy just as many games as the "not casual market" on the PS3? So if "casual market" doesn't mean "gamers who buy less games", what does this leave? Is the "casual market" simply the term used for gamers who like games that Carl dislikes? It sure seems like it and the franchises you listed at the end support this conclusion.
What is the casual market? Wikipedia has a good definition of a "Casual Gamer"...
"Casual gamer" is a loosely defined term used to describe a type of video game player whose time or interest in playing games is limited compared with a hardcore gamer. Casual gamers can conceivably consist of any people who show more than a passing interest in video games, therefore it is difficult to categorize them as a group. For this reason, games which attempt to appeal to the casual player tend to strive for simple rules and ease of game play, the goal being to present a pick-up-and-play experience that people from any age group or skill level could enjoy.
Casual gaming demographics also vary greatly from those of traditional computer games, as the typical casual gamer is older and more predominantly female, with over 74% of those purchasing casual games being women. A recent survey conducted by one of the largest casual game developers shows that more than one in five (20.5%) players of casual games have a physical, mental or developmental disability.
Anyway, i count the "Casual Market" as the market on Wii that consistently buys games like this.

The last one is actually from the "EA Casual Entertainment" brand...

RolStoppable said: Carl, I think we are getting closer to what we talked about last time. You hold the position that Nintendo focused on the "casual market", therefore third parties made (or tried to make) such games too. Of course there are also many core games on the Wii that sold several million units, yet nobody was willing to make such games for the Wii. Case in point: Zelda with about 5m copies sold. The lacking sales of Okami are no valid point, because that game sold poorly on the "core focused" PS2 too, meaning there are problems with the game itself, not the consoles it was released on. Anyway, nobody seems to be willing to make a game for the Zelda fanbase (i.e. you) despite knowing that it takes Nintendo around three years for a new game. There is a huge opportunity to sell such a game, the question is why does nobody try? So essentially we are exactly at the same point where we left off last time. You say it's Nintendo's fault that there aren't better and more core games on the Wii and I, of course, disagree. Just like third parties are to blame for their own sales failures, they are also to blame for not taking opportunities. And in case they do it's usually a halfassed attempt, lacking in quality, appeal, advertisements or all of them. That in turn leads to disappointing sales and the proclamation that core games don't sell.
Seems that way, so i think we should just get back onto the topic of Mario not being the king of videogames.

RolStoppable said: But Mario is the king. His games are selling consistently since over 25 years now. Wii _____ won't achieve the same thing and Shigeru Miyamoto may be the father of Mario, but people recognize Mario much more. It's only logical that Mario is the king of video games. Nothing else has a better combination of quality, sales, longetivity (spelled incorrectly, probably) and popularity that even extends beyond people who play video games.
The thread is about sales though.
And Shiggy/"Wii" has had more sales this gen than Mario!

No this thread is about how Mario is the ONLY video game character who appeals to a huge audience of any age, sex, and race. To include that some of his main games receive outstanding recognition and top the best video games of all time lists. Mario appealing to almost anyone+quality games= superb sales. Who else will come to mind when someone talks about video games? I'm sure it's not Final Fantasy. Plus I was referring to a game character, Mario's creator is not a video game character nor is the "Wii series".

@ Red... Prove it. I could show you Pikachu... Or the entire Pokemon roster and say the same thing.
@ Blue... Pacman. "Tetris". Pong. Solitaire. "Mii".
And just to make it known again... Shiggy > Mario.
@Rol. I can multitask. Argue against mario and play FFXIII at the same time!
