Forums - Website Topics - Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

Ad blocking is something I never bothered with because of the potential damage to the free sites I frequent. Either the internet becomes for pay, or people learn to accept advertising. I will disable flash on occasion though depending. This has the effect of disabling 99% of ads that make noise. Sadly it takes out others, but I cannot deal with the sound creating ads for various reasons.

If I don't block I CAN'T even come to the site. It's all over the place, huge and sometimes irritating. I can deal with ads, but this is beyond what my nature can endure. Slow down on the amount, make it less in my face and I will remove it from my block list.

I understand the analogy just fine. There are subscription sites, and free sites. It's free to users, not those who run it. Which is why the restaurant analogy doesn't work. Both site types have overhead costs, but one charges for its content. We're not being charged to view a free site, we're charged to view a subscription based site. It's expecting people using the free service to pay for it when they aren't forced to.

actually.. some ad servers prevents me from visiting this site.. it just waits for a response and it never loads the site completly... anyway I have a tip for the next version of site: shrink back the width of the website below 980px... all professional sites are below that so they can sell advertsing space next to their main site.. 2 IAB 120 x 600 can fetch you good money.. if they don't have adblock..

...am I the only one that doesn't see all these crazy ads?

Is it my location or my browser (Opera)?

Who actually buys gaming shirts?

About 75-100 people per day?

Actually that's considerably more than I expected.

One last question, do the IP owners get a cut? Is there some sort of legal loophole like parody?

Uhm, my boss told me that adblocking isn't that harmful as the ad is still loaded, just not shown. It loads and it adds to the "views" = good for the site and the advertizer. It doesn't show to some people who bothered to use adblock = good for those users.

I don't block them, and i've only ever had 2 annoying ad's.

The Bioshock 2 one, and the one that used to pop up at the bottom of the screen.

People might be blocking the ads because at one time they were out of control. I rarely notice them now other than the annoying back drops I accidently click. Who actually buys gaming shirts? Its like vagina repellent.

I have gotten action because of a geeky shirt. Pigeon-holing all women into a given stereotype is a deadly mistake. Hot gaming girls are not nearly as rare as many want you to think.
