Forums - Website Topics - Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

If I don't block I CAN'T even come to the site. It's all over the place, huge and sometimes irritating. I can deal with ads, but this is beyond what my nature can endure. Slow down on the amount, make it less in my face and I will remove it from my block list.

Read the article again (or for the first time)...

I read I agree business wise it hurts the site and any site, but these software were created for a reason,  I never used to block this site, but as the site became more popular, the ads became more annoying, in your face and just ruin my enjoyment of browsing. I'd rather pay to get an ad free environment then to deal with those ads.

Honestly, I understand your point and as soon as I ......my friend gets a new computer he will be happy to turn off his ad-blocker but at the moment the ads are killing his little old laptop.

I literally *CANNOT* browse VGC on my 5 year old Apple laptop unless I block flash/ads. Most other websites have a reasonable amount of ads and aren't painfully slow with ads enabled. Frankly, I wish there there was a mobile/low bandwidth version of the site to use on my phone as well.

The ads that I see on my home PC are mostly a scam anyways. Mom learns how to whiten teeth at home? Get ripped in 2 weeks? Before/after ads for weight loss with half naked girls? Lingerie models in evony ads? I know you don't have that much control over this stuff but come on, I expect to see this crap in spam emails, not a legitimate website.

I'm sorry. That is all I will say.

I would be ok it just one window would pop up with pub, but a half a dozen of them is pretty annoying.

We block the ads the same way admins block spambots in their websites.

I agree that Evony ads are what got me started.
I will apologize since I don't think I will stop any time soon.

There is a reason why Google comes out on top on web browsers. I know this is not the same thing but still you see what I mean.

Most of these sites including this one I visit for fun and sometimes get other users opinions on games. I do not wish to openly open my self up to ads that may harm my computer to do that. I would just stop going to those sites. I do not find any site I go to except my schools website worth going to if I had to pay. As I can get all the same information elsewhere, and by other means.

It is a bit sad that because of ad views some sites might loose employee's and everything else, but again a lot of people would stop going to them anyways. It is kind of a lose lose situation.

I understand the analogy just fine. There are subscription sites, and free sites. It's free to users, not those who run it. Which is why the restaurant analogy doesn't work. Both site types have overhead costs, but one charges for its content. We're not being charged to view a free site, we're charged to view a subscription based site. It's expecting people using the free service to pay for it when they aren't forced to.

You're being charged, just not in dollars. Think of ad views as the currency instead then you can see how the analogy works.

There's no expectation to pay or provide currency though... Free site.... I think we're having a communication break down.  I say potato, you say view ads. :P

No, you're seeing "value" as being dollars, I'm saying dollars are just one representation of value. That is all money is afterall, a representation of wealth or value.

I'm saying that rather than paying dollars, you pay via a small amount of inconvenience to view an ad. That ad view has a value much like a dollar bill does, and we can redeem that ad view via an advertiser who is willing to exchange it for dollars to reach a small percentage of you guys.

It's not a communication breakdown, just that a very good analogy went over your head because you read it too literally rather than understanding the underlying point that is trying to be made.

Sorry, the analogy is terrible.  I'm sorry it went over your head.  I mentioned it to the wife and she said it's terrible too and that it's more like not tipping after eating at a restaurant, but what do women know?

My understanding is that even with an ad blocker, there is still a permanent ad on the right and left sides of the screen. Plus, an ad on the top. Additionally, when someone first comes to the site, there is often a full page ad. Also, when someone first comes to the site, there is often a pop up full page ad.

People might be blocking the ads because at one time they were out of control. I rarely notice them now other than the annoying back drops I accidently click. Who actually buys gaming shirts? Its like vagina repellent.

I have gotten action because of a geeky shirt. Pigeon-holing all women into a given stereotype is a deadly mistake. Hot gaming girls are not nearly as rare as many want you to think.

Depends on age and how the person wearing the shirt looks. I'm sure there are broads out there who get moist for gaming shirts.

You misunderstand, Gnizmo has a face for radio porn (yes that bad), but nerd shirts in general work.  The best is badass gaming shirts like Gears stuff if you're going for the goth type, I've even seen goth girls with the gear as a tattoo, and something that takes some thought to get, that gets the cute intelligent girls, they read it and comment on how thats cool and you have a good talking point
