Forums - Sony Discussion - Teletext : Heavy Rain Review (Abysmal)

I think the review got some stuff right.

If the game tries to be an interactive movie, then it's plot should indeed be judged by movie standards. I haven't played the game, but if the story is shallow and clichéed as the reviewer said, then I fully support his reasoning and the score that he gave the game.

I would like this game to be compared to Shenmue since the gameplay and overall concept seems so similar to me, but I haven't seen that in any review.

Also, the reviewer said that a fault of the game lies in Quantic Dreams own writing ability. That is really worrying. They could afford all those high end graphics, but not proffessional writers? That's horrible if it's true.

I LOVE ICELAND!

that'll hurt surely the score

It only dropped from an 89 to an 88.

Yeah I went on Metacritic and was like ... Oh, it didn't drop that much

I thought the 40 would hurt more.

Ah, another "praise/kill the review site depending on score" thread. This time it's pitchfork time.

Of all the many hypes we already saw this gen on all consoles, the one which emerged around Heavy Rain during the last few weeks feels like the strangest and most faked one to me. Quick time hype, so to speak.

emporers new clothes...?

I'm getting Heavy Rain and will play it through... but I think there is a strange elite attitude surrounding the game

It is almost as though it is impossible to criticise the game because Heavy Rain is somehow arty and high brow and that means it shouldnt be criticised because the developers have been brave.

Have played around 6 hours since yesterday, for any imature or unrational person this game will not be good. Maybe thats why you get the elite feeling, a young or immature person will obviously not like this game. Its slow, its intelligent, its make you think, its definitly not like our usual blockbuster game. The fact you dont like the game doesnt mean your immature tho, because you may not like the gameplay, story or anything else.

what are you on about.  I havent even played it yet.  I am talking about the pre-release opinion of the game.   I played the demo and it was ok... hence I am buying it on release in the UK.

Oh, sorry the last part wasnt towards you, it wasnt towards anyone actually, just saying that someone could hate the game even if hes mature.

Hey...some goof gave 5/10 to bayonetta tool. These reviews happen. It sucks though as one would hope people that review games know what they are talking about.

Some Reviewers gave Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 5/10 and 55/100 to.

Japanese Pop Culture Otaku

read the review, it's very well written and accurate..

definitely the best videogame review I've read in a long time. Uses real paradigms in entertainment terms, not technology.. reminds me of movie reviews, it's so refreshing when it relates to videogames it literally sounds genious..

We need a real games media.

I will copy/paste what i said in the official thread.

"lol @ teletext

Seriously, the game has 46 Reviews 90 or OVER.

17 Reviews ranging from 70-89

And a single review below 70 from them at... 40?

I smell bullshit."

I refuse to believe it deserves that score

The production values ALONE should make it deserve over a 5 at the minimum.

Good game or not, that's just a horrible thing to say.

Are you saying just because a game has a lot of money or effort poured into it should automatically be set to a certain level?

I'm not saying Heavy Rain deserves that score, I don't know, I haven't played it, but to say it should get a minimum 5 for the production values alone is just flat out stupid.

When people talked about 2012 (the film) being an awesome movie, it was ONLY about the production values of the CGI world destruction. The movie literally had almost nothing else.... so yeah, production values like those give them quite a few points.

you mean like 80% of the amercian movie ?

beeeeeee  beeeeeeee

Side Note : I just have seen "Brothers" what a good movie !!!

EDIT : OMG, cant believe it, Brothers (2009) is just a copy of ... Brothers (2004) a danish movie ... it is an amercian adaptation of a danish movie ....

Time to Work !

sometimes the extreme negative reviews can be a bit helpful. since it would focus on what they didn't like and let people know things that some reviews gloss over. Not saying that all good reviews gloss things over. But sometime I've seen some people really dislike something that I like and seeing it in a review can be helpful. Also if it's the only low review people will notice and not judge the game based on the one review. If it were getting many 4s that would be more of an issue. Looking forward to playing this game myself some point soon. Then maybe I'll look at some of the reviews.

No, they don't.  I know Heavy Rain is advertised more as an interactive movie and all but it's still a game.  A game can still have incredibly high production values and be ass.

Three games that come up right off the top of my head are Lair, Too Human, and Lost: Via Domus.

Lair-- it was meant to show off the power of the PS3 and was touted as this super beautiful game with a fantastic score and cinematic events.  Everything production side was pretty top notch, too bad the game was terrible.

Too Human-- 10 year production cycle later with more hype than most games dreamed up and a pretty high production values and it was a giant embarassement.  Such an awful game.

Lost: Via Domus-- it may not have been a big budget game like the above two but it had pretty high production values, especially for a movie/TV show based game.  There was a fair amount of hype leading up to it (if you liked Lost) and it turned out to be one of the worst games of this generation.

So no, you don't get an automatic pass for production values.

Again, not even trying to imply that Heavy Rain might be bad or in any way compared to those above three mistakes, it has an 89 at the moment so I assume it's good, I'm just saying production values don't make the game.

Lost was a good game for fans of the show. I loved it.

You're probably not a real fan ;)

I liked the story of Lost: Via Domus, but I think I would have liked it a lot more if I had just skipped the terrible game and read a FAQ.

Considering the possible love/hate that this game will be getting, its fair that reviewers review games as they see them. I would rather have one review of 4/10 than to have every review giving the same score within a set range. I don't think this is a black mark against the game as it is against the review system itself. The game can stand on its own thank you very much.
