DS is only 1.6 million units behind, and they stopped shipping PS2's.

DS probably won't surpass PS2 by the end of 2012, but it should pass at some point in 2013. Sony hasn't shipped very many PS2's this year, and it's only selling about 1,000-3,000 units a week. That's only going to last until inventory clears, which is 154.4 million according to Sony.

The DS is selling 40,000 a week, and is looking to finish the year at 2.5-3 million. So the DS only needs 1 million sales for 2013 to top PS2, and even if it doesn't do it in 2013, it will do it by 2014.

Also 3DS is tracking significantly above the DS, so 3DS could top both the PS2 and the DS.

Sony shipped 800k-1m PS2s just last quarter though. That's almost twice the amount Nintendo shipped of DS. That's way more than 1k-3k a week as well. Sony predicted 3m for the whole year, Nintendo 2.5m DS's iirc.

Can I ask where you read that? Sony only shipped 900k in Q3 2011, which was down from 2.1 million before that. Q4 shipments last fall were also only 600k, down 50% from the year prior. Sony last confirmed 154.4 million shipped, which was a while back too, and VGC only had PS2 tracked to about 153 million at the start of this year, before they stopped supplying this info.

Here.

Media Create also only lists PS2 selling 250 - 500 or so units a week, where it used to sell 1,000 a week last year.

http://andriasang.com/con1sh/enterbrain_sales/ (Week Ending July 1st)

I read a september report and PS2 was just below 250 sales in Japan.

In America's PS2 is also basically dead, so EMEAA is supplying PS2 sales.

Edit: Earlier in the year, PS2 was still selling 1,000 units or so, but prior to 2012 it's never sold below 500 a week. PS2 is phasing out.

Consoles and handhelds should never ever be considered at the same level.

And I agree, the next Nintendo console will prevent the Wii to sell more than the PS2.

Actually Wii sales have been crashing for a while. It's not the Wii U which is limiting the Wii, but the lack of software support. Wii outpaced the PS2 for i think 5 years straight and now sales are crumbling, where PS2 managed to hold a slow decline from 13 million to 8 million in it's later years.

If Nintendo gets some good third party support for the Wii U, I could see Wii U topping PS2 and being the first home console to top PS2.

-.-

I said that nearly 3 years ago lol

Things have changed since!

Source? I haven't seen any evidence of this without you including your own speculation, so just wait for the shipment figures to come.

I made no speculation in this thread... just showed facts... in the last two quarter (Q4 2011 and Q1 2012 for Nintendo/Sony) the PS2 shipped more units than DS... #FACT because the shipped numbers are public.

DS shipped 460k (Q4 FY2011) and 540k (Q1 FY2012)
PS2 shipped 600k (Q4 FY2011) and ~1,000k (Q1 FY2012) * PS2 shippe over 1000k because PS3 is down YoY and it shipped 1.8m in the last year... at minumum 1.0m for PS2 to reach 2.8m shipped *

Sony forecast is 3m PS2 in the FY2012 (2m to go)
Nintendo forecast is 2.5m DS in the FY2012 (1.96m to go)

There is no speculation... face it and google the info (from Nintendo and Sony sites).

PS. I'm not including the Q2 FY2012 (Sep 30th, 2012) because neither Sony or Nintendo release the data yet.

@pezus is talking about the last quarter we have number... Q1 FY2012... Sony shipped ~1m PS2 down from 1.4m in the same quarter from the last year.

Last confirmed shipped state from Sony is Q4 FY2011... 155.1m.

Add more 1m in for the Q1 FY2012 and you have...

July 30th, 2012: 156.1 PS2 shipped.

Waiting now the Q2 FY2012.

PS. DS and Wii is phasing out... PS2 outshipped both in the last two quarters... I will not be surprise if it did again in this quarter (last year it shipped 1.2m in Q2).

The fact that you put a range lol, is proof of you making that up. Why not the exact shipments? Maybe because that 800k - 1m is speculation.

So how many untis PS3 shipped for you???

* Some hints *

- PS3 is down compared to 2011
- PS3 shipped 1.8m in 2011
- PS2 is down compared to 2011
- PS2 shipped 1.4m in 2011
- PS2 + PS3 = 2.8m this year

Make maths dude and stop to deny the facts.

If you need I can help you... there few options with there data, choose one:

A) PS3 1.79m / PS2 1.01m
B) PS3 1.7m / PS2 1.1m
C) PS3 1.6m / PS2 1.2m
D) PS3 1.5m / PS2 1.3m
E) PS3 1.41m / PS2 1.39m

Enough to wish for the best for the PS2? I have a question for you though, which scenario is better? In scenario 1, Apple's Iphone 5 sells 200 million units and the Iphone 6 sells 100 million. In scenario 2, Apple's Iphone 5 sells 150 million and Iphone 6 sells 150 million. Which scenario do you think is better?

Maybe 2?

I don't know... I just said it's almost impossible the PS2 haven't shipped over 540k in the last quarter (aka June 30th, 2012).
