It's a tie for me between New Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Mario Bros 3 and 2... I will go with NSMBW because of multi, Yoshi and incredible final boss.

I didn't forget it, but for many gamers, this isn't in the same 2D Mario serie. It's sorta spinoff, although this game would rank for me higher than Super Mario Bros 3.
veryone know that Yoshi's Island is tchnically a different series than the other 6 Main Marios.
Above: still the best game of the year.
New Super Mario Bros Wii for me.
IMO it has the greatness of both SMB3 and World. Then to add, it has 4 player multiplayer.

it makes me happy that marioworld is winning
at the time it came out it blew my mind.
scaling rotation and the sound quality was ahead of anything on genesis or turbo at that time.
plus bongos while on yoshi, context sensitive excitement.
Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6). This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.
