SONY could turn in stronger direction.. just because there niche now doesn't destined them to always be niche..and no SONY cannot buy SE...Atlus yes |
Why not? They are big enough to buy them
Well since sony seems to have strong bias towards anything with a gun this gen, Insomniac Games...
However i would like ThatGameComapny to be bought out by sony, and level 5 if possible.
Oh and have Studio liver pool make a sci-fi rpg like star ocean and awesome effect.
Insomniac Games - They've mentioned numerous times that they love their independence, and have no want to be purchased. I'm sure Sony has put the possibility on the table multiple times, much like they did with Naughty Dog back in 2001, but the fact that they haven't been picked up yet makes it pretty unlikely it'll ever happen, barring Insomniac suddenly falling into a very weak situation financially.
Media Molecule - This is the studio I'd most love for Sony to buy (well, them and From Software), and for awhile I just assumed it would happen, given the success of LBP and the trend of Sony buying developers that they have a nice working relationship with. However, these days I'm not so sure. I've been reading more and more about Media Molecule's history, and the team leads left Lionhead solely because they favor the creative freedom that comes with independent development. I'm not so sure they'd be fine with jumping back into first party development anytime soon.
Quantic Dream - They're quite a bit more than just a development studio, and Sony only really works with them on Heavy Rain, afaik. Unlikely that this would happen, though I suppose the tech they work on could be useful for other first parties.
Sucker Punch - This is a possibility. but I also feel they're in a situation somewhat similar to Insomniac. If they were going to be bought, it would've happened long ago. I also don't think they're as productive as some other studios. Their games don't sell as well as even Insomniac's, yet they spend at least twice as long in development.
ThatGameCompany - I'm sure Sony has had some thoughts about buying these guys, but given how small scale their projects are, it probably wouldn't change the status quo much to do so. I think TGC are quite happy where they are, and they are also probably in the "indy studios making indy games are the best" camp, so they'd probably want to stay independent.
United Front Games - These guys actually seem like the most likely to be bought, but that's probably only because I know so little about them. They seem to be making a rather high quality game, and and don't seem to be on the "indy is cool!" side of the fence, so I could see Sony snatching them up if ModNation is successful and their next title turns out well.
In the end, I'd most want Sony to buy Media Molecule (lock up their amazing talent for the future - LittleBigPlanet is the best showcase for what the PSN/PS3 are capable of, and I'd love to see more of that from these guys) and From Software (with a larger budget and tech support from Sony's other first parties, Demon's Souls could become even better, and Armored Core could turn into the top tier mech franchise it should be - it's always been very rough around the edges).
I don't think either of these are very likely candidates, however. =/
*chooses Media Molecule anyway*
I agree with you CGI, Media Molecule first. They have developed an IP that sold more than 3 million, created an incredibly recognizable and loved character and must be making a very good amount of profit not only from sales of the game, but also from all the DLC that has been made available.
Furthermore, they are a talented and creative bunch of developers, which is essential to create IPs that people will connect with.
Arn't UFG making that True Crime game for Activision and 360/PS3?
Insomniac games would be the worst investment for Sony. They already get what they want from them(exclusive games) and it is unlikely to change anytime soon. If they bought them it would probably lead to a lot of the top level guys leaving to start a new development studio as well as possibly create some animosity(they like their independence) and Sony would have lost a lot of value. They already own the IP's so they wouldn't be buying those. Insomniac makes good games but they're also nothing too special that 2nd party sucker punch or first party Naughty Dog/Santa Monica Studios couldn't replace with a similar game if needed.
I'd say Quantic Dream would be the best or Media Molecule. Both of those developers are much smaller but have a unique style of game they are going after which Sony seems to really covet. Neither of them really have as strong of a relationship with Sony as Sucker Punch or Insomniac does, so the threat of them going multiplat is much greater. Quantic Dream's previous games were multiplat and if Heavy Rain doesn't sell great but has a strong community that loves the game I'd look for Sony to snatch up the developer as a threat to go multiplat next time would be much larger than any other 2nd party developer. Also Sony doesn't want to lose that strong community which they seem to really like. And both developers seem to put out games that are unmatched in style/game type by MS right now so they are good differentiation developers for Sony.
Of course all of this is just superficial as the cost and the willingness of the developer to want to be purchased plays a much bigger part in this and those factors are unknown (other than insomniac stating they like their independence).
Sucker Punch falls under the Insomniac category while United Front and That Game Company are more like MM and QD but to a lesser extent.
I think Insominiac would be an awesome purchase. Their games are so fun.

This pretty much sums it up...
