No long introduction this time, the story of NSMB Wii was lame, it sucked and it was totally predictable, we all know it. So here is my idea for the plot and gameplay of the next Mario 2D platformer:
Trouble is threatening the wealth of the Mushroom Kingdom. During the last few nights someone has stolen a sizeable chunk of the vegetables on the farmers' fields. An emergency conference takes place in Peach's castle. The culprit and reason for the crime is unknown, but Luigi has a theory: Bowser ordered his minions to steal the vegetables in order to weaken future generations of the kingdom due to a lack of vitamins, that way it would be easier for him to overthrow the current monarchy.
People start laughing at Luigi's idea, then decide to try to capture the thiefs, probably just some random hungry Wigglers, in the following night. Since that is still quite a few hours away, Peach wants to bake a delicious cake for the Mario brothers. Unfortunately, she doesn't have all the necessary ingredients in the castle, so she sends Mario and Luigi to Toad Town. What follows is the first level of the game, a classic grass land stage.
Once in Toad Town and after doing all the errands, Mario and Luigi are stopped by a Toad police officer just when they attempt to leave town. "The road is blocked, Kamek dropped some blocks and since this isn't a Paper Mario game, I am afraid I have to tell you to find another route." Well, that means it's time for level two, an underground stage.
What follows is a lengthy cutscene, you see Peach baking that delicious cake while the Mario brothers take a nap. Then the sun goes down and there's another long cutscene on the fields. However, Mario and Luigi are unable to catch the thiefs, because it appears that the vegetables are stolen by some animals who live below the surface of the earth.
Anyway, on the next day Peach receives a letter from Bowser in which he announces that the days of the Mushroom Kingdom are numbered. Sounds like a job for Mario and Luigi and they head towards Bowser's castle to take his name and kick his ass. Level three resembles the third stage of the original Super Mario Bros. game, some random platforms in the sky. After an epic cutscene showing you Bowser's magnificent castle from a hundred different angles, the fourth and also final level of the game starts. A classic castle stage with fire, lava and all that other stuff.
Now it's time for the final showdown, but instead of an actual boss fight everyone would expect, there's just one long cutscene. Mario and Luigi enter Bowser's throne room where the king of Koopas already awaits them.
Mario: "Bowser, we have read your letter. You are up to no good again and... what's up with all these vegetables?"
Bowser: "Ah, Mario, that's a good question. You know, I've tried to overthrow the Mushroom Kingdom numerous times in the past, but I failed time and time again. This got me thinking about what the reasons for my failures were."
Mario: "So what did you come up with?"
Bowser: "My army of minions is a joke. You see, there are the Goombas who are pretty much useless. They just walk down the road, unless they bump into an object. Lots of them fell into bottomless pits in the past. My Parakoopa squad isn't exactly full of bright guys either. I tell them to invade the kingdom and a few minutes after they have left my castle they already forgot what they were supposed to do and for example, start to fly mindlessly up and down in the same spot."
Mario: "I guess that means you are trying to recruit better minions now?"
Bowser: "That was my original plan, but you see, good servants cost a lot of money. I robbed some banks, but for some weird reason I am always losing the majority of my loot on my way back to the castle."
Mario: "Yeah, I already wondered where all these random coins I found on my way here come from."
Bowser: "Exactly. So I thought, if I can't make my army stronger, I'll have to make my opponents weaker. That's why I ordered my Monty Mole brigade to steal all these vegetables you see here. Future generations of the Mushroom Kingdom will be weakened due to a lack of vitamins. Muahaha!"
*Luigi does a victory dance*
Mario: "But Bowser, there's one glaring flaw in your evil plan."
Bowser (stops laughing): "What is it?"
Mario: "You never had a problem fighting against all those Toads, your demise has always been us, the Mario brothers."
Bowser: "Nooooo! My fantastic plan! All for nothing, it can't be!"
*Bowser pulls out a machine gun from behind his throne*
Bowser: "Now I am going to finish this once and for all! Muahaha!"
Mario: "Bowser, you do realize that this game is rated E for everyone, right?"
Bowser: "I have lost too many times to count, I don't care anymore. This is your end!"
Suddenly Solid Snake jumps out from under his box, pulls out a tranquilizer gun and shoots Bowser.
Snake: "You don't mess with the ESRB!"
*Incoming C.O.D.E.C. call*
Colonel: "Well done, Snake. You have defeated the enemy. However, all of this was only a simulation. Now you should be ready to fight against the aliens who are invading our world."
*Screen goes black and a message pops up: "To be continued..." - The credits start to roll*
So what do you guys think about my story? It has it all: Tension, epic cutscenes, drama and cake. The cliffhanger ending helps Nintendo to make a yearly series out of the game and Snake being in there should strengthen Nintendo's relationship with third party companies, especially Konami.
