Forums - Gaming Discussion - Peter Molyneux picks his TOP 5 most INNOVATIVE games (Do you agree)?!

Scoobes said:
I can understand all the games he chose and why he chose them but I would add Elder Scrolls: Arena as it was the first open world game (1994) and was the first game to have a Day-Night cycle. Also, surely Wolfenstein 3D should be up there as it invented the FPS genre.

Elder Scrolls is the first thing that poped in my head when he was talking about open world gaming.

While Wolf3D invented FPS, I think Quake is more influential. This was many peoples first experience with online FPS's. When QuakeWorld added TCP/IP support those stuck with dial-up could actually achieve playable pings! Oh sure it wasn't as good as those LPB's with cable/DSL but still decent   That made it accessible to more and more people and it just snowballed from there - to where we are today.

Currently Playing:
Resistance 2 Co-op (anyone call for a Medic?)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PC)
F.E.A.R. (PC)

Currently Ignoring:
My 360 and Wii.

SERIOUSLY?! You guys are like a bunch of vultures right now, picking apart everything he said. None of us has the "perfect" list, you know how many games have come out in the last 20 years that could justifiable make the Top 5?! Seriously...it's his opinion, get your own, and stop nit picking, and hating. "No PlayStation exclusives" My goodness..that's just desperate.

You might have a point with Quake, I remember playing it with my mates after school. Good times. It was also the first FPS to include fully 3D character models I believe.

I can name at least 3.

Mario/Mario 64 - Created platformers and influenced all gaming henceforth. (At least he got this one right)

Dragon Quest - Took the RPG genre from the niche PC market and make it popular on consoles, as well as setting an entire nation on fire to them.  Set the stage for such titles as Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei, Mother, Pokemon, etc.

Legend of Zelda - Created the Action/Adventure genre as we know it.  'nough said.

Seriously, there's a ton of games (or series) which have influenced games better than what he has said.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

My list would be:

Tetris (everything)
Warioware Touched! (DS)
Wii Sports (can't remember which console)
Super Mario Bros. (Nes)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
Grand Theft Auto 3 (PS2)
Indigo Prophecy (PS2/Xbox)
Goldeneye (N64)/ Castle Wolfenstein 3D (PC)
Mario Kart (Snes)

I'm mostly a console gamer, though. I'm sure there are PC titles that should be noted.
Anybody else wanna give it a try? What games would make the definitive VGChartz list?

Hell, (not trying to derail thread), I think Tomb Raider came out on the Saturn a little before the Playstation!

Tomb Radier was developped for the Sega Saturn then ported to PS1. This was early 1996 so each comapny still had a chance to be market leader.  Of course with the PS1 taking off for christmas 1996, Tomb raider 2 was a ps1 exclusive, along pretty much every other 3rd party game.

Are we undertracking Fable 2?

It is highly unlikely over a year on that there would be 800k copies sitting on shelves...

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Sounds like he's talking more about influencial games. But then that doesn't explain WoW on the list...

4 ≈ One

I've never played Dune 2, but I can agree with the rest even if I hate WoW with a passion. It's the only game I've ever 'hated', because I've seen what it can do to people firsthand.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
