Forums - Sony - PS4 hidden gems/underrated titles

I missed out on having a PS4 last gen so have been catching up on some of the games that passed me by; I've picked up pretty much all the big famous ones that make up the "top ten games on PS4" lists and such, (the ones that interest me, anyway) but my experience has been that a lot of really good games are often overlooked in these conversations because they're a bit niche or unpolished, but can still be a lot of fun.

So I was wondering if you fine folks knew of any lesser known "hidden gem" titles on PS4 that might be worth grabbing? Thanks in advance.

I don't think I've any truly hidden gems to recommend, but there's some less known ones I could recommend. The MediEvil remake was excellent. Tearaway Unfolded was definitely worth experiencing, although it had some frustrating aspects as well. inFamous: Second Son was also quite fun, especially since it didn't really overstay its welcome.

As for games I've played on PC but suspect are also available on PS4, the Wolfenstein games by MachineGames are nice. I suspect you're already familiar with Okami HD but if you're not and it's available on PS4 like I suspect, that's definitely a good one too.

As for some indie games I've played on PC but think are available on PS4 as well, Firewatch is worth a mention. If you've missed Journey, I can recommend that one too.

Thanks; Tearaway and Infamous are on my radar. I had my eye on the Medievil remake but I heard it was very difficult due to the gameplay still being the same as it was back in 90s when games were much tougher than today, and I don't cope well with frustration. Just how tricky is it?

Hardcore Mecha. Indie Side scrolling mech action game. It's pretty fun and sometimes can get out of the mech and do mission on foot.

Earth's Dawn. Imagine if Vanillaware made a Sci-fi action game. This would be it. Nice hand drawn visuals. Almost Gears of War ish in setting. Also on Switch as Earth Wars.

Abzu. It's single player only Journey and underwater.

Assault Suit Leynos. A great remake of the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive cult classic. Has some QOL improvements and new hand drawn art.

Chorus/Chorvs. Also on modern consoles.I explained this in the Star Fox thread. Story driven space dog fighting game with some Zelda like dungeons. You're basically female Darth Vader defecting from the Empire.

Curved Space. A fun top isometric twin stick shooter. Sci Fi. Mostly shoot space spiders.

Metal Wolf Chaos XD. It is an HD port of the original Xbox mecha shooter developed by From Software. No this is not like Armored Core. This is just a shooter. You play as Michael Wilson the President of the USA. His vice president has turned evil and turned the country against him. YOu must clear your name by naturally getting in a mech and shoot everything.

Nex Machina. Maybe not hidden as it is from Housmarque but this is the best twin stick I ever played and is inspired by Robotron 2084.

Matterfall. Another Housemarque game but a side scrolling shooter. Pretty good.

Ultra Age. Rough around the edges with some bad VA but a solid action game. In some ways it's a Nier at home but not quite that.

Caladrius Blaze. It's a solid Shmup but the downside is the anime girls lose clothes when you do better in the game. No nudity thankfully but if you can handle that cringe. Solid shooter.

Battle Garegga. Not hidden to fans of the genre but it is to most and a fantastic game, Brutally hard tho.

I could just list shmups tho lol I won't. Too long.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Resogun is a treat.

Infamous Second Son and First Light are a good time.

Dreams is only available on PS4. Probably the most underrated and underplayed PS4 game.

Rachet and Clank is a great remake of the first game and based on the movie.

Thanks a bunch! :)

I am intrigued by Chorvs but when I tried the demo it just showed me a video of "how to play" then threw me straight into a dogfight without giving me the chance to come to grips with the controls. Does the actual game do this or do you remember if it has a proper tutorial?

Cheers; gonna grab Second Son and see if I like it, if I do, I'll get First Light.

Ratchet has been added to the list. :)

Proper tutorial.  In fact you start with junky slow ship for the first few missions. Then you get the cool ship rest of the game. Meant to show the contrast between normal ships and the cool one.
